✅ SOLVED What is it Old Wood Thing Tool?

Found this for free don't remember if it was a dumpster dive or free box at garage sale. Took it because it looks old. What is it?! It measures about 13in long 2in wide at the wide part. It has a hole through the handle. For some reason I can picture a leather strap running through it to wrap on your wrist and beat something?

It appears to be a slapping spoon but I've never seen one made from wood. A slapping is used in auto body work and metal forming. Maybe it's for soft material like modeling clay.

Right on with the lead beater.

For a little context, back before the use of polyester auto body putty, lead was the filler of choice. The old time body men were really expert at "Metal Bumping" and could bring a panel back to near perfection. So they applied molten lead over the repair and formed it with these beaters. Unlike polyester, the lead would never draw moisture so it lasted nearly forever. The process is still used by high end restoration outfits. Ventilation is a must.

There was one of those nail paddles in my school as well...I remember telling my parents and they called me a liar...lol

It was probably just to scare the kids, but it was there...

I had the distinction that my Grandfather was the only maintenance man for the entire county in the 50s. He was the one who made all the paddles for all the schools. So when I got it, it was a lot more personal! He really could do wonders with oak and holes! LOL

His father was on the board of education, he just made the myth a reality!
