Reproduction may be Primitive inkwell, they made millions of them some were special made for masters etc, looking at your pictures it looks to be a repro, maybe Indonesian or Egypt made, nice carving but just too perfect to be authentic.
I've posted a few real ones to give you an idea of what the squares might have been used for.
