It was used to basically hang any accessories you wanted to off of it. You tossed it??? DOH!

....depends on what you are calling a "j" hook. The smaller variety were brass and found commonly on knapsacks/leather bags. Larger hooks were sometimes made of ferrous material and were used for holding larger items. A knapsack hook by itself is a nice piece of history but not worth much. If you dig several miscellaneous items like these in a camp then the value is higher for the set.
