I collect scales but have never seen one in a glass case, any ideas what this would have been used for? TIA.

we had scales in a case like that in the lab at the sewage treatment plant back in the 90s.

I started my career as a research chemist some 40 years ago. All of the scales in our lab were like that. The glass case should have a sliding door. After you have inserted your material and adjusted the weights, you close the case and can very accurately check the balance without the pans being affected by draughts or your own breathing.

The glass case prevents air currents from disturbing the process. And also dust from entering.
