So when being new to identifying found objects what's good practice, pointers, how-to's? I found this item a few weeks ago and have no clue where to begin on cleaning? Cutting in half? Melting? Smashing did nothing, lol

Any help in direction will be greatly appreciated 🤘

Non-magnetic
13.99grams (feels very heavy for size to me) will work on specific gravity(2.332)
Solid 85 tone on the trusty Ace 250
My 1st attempt on a streak test was a shiny silver color on the Jon lid.

*Might* be slag. IIRC, though, slag generally doesn't leave a streak. Is it relatively heavy/light for its size? On my Ace, I found a lot of aluminum slag when I hit those same numbers. Does it attract a magnet at all? I assume not but just checking.

Use that scale and a glass of water to find its specific gravity: and post the result here and tag me.

@hollARDog those numbers and that SG lead me to suspect a melted aluminum can from a fire. You find it in the woods somewhere where folks might have been drinking beer around a fire?

Check out this picture of a melted can:

So I'm safe to clean/scratch/pick at the crust layer?

Ok, so that was today's lesson. So the above mentioned is pretty much laumans terms, aluminum ore? Very well could be. I do live in heavy red clay area. How does one go about distinguishing between melted can or bauxite?

Don,t really know,it was a guess.Bauxite was once plentiful in Arkansas, there,s even a town named Bauxite. The ore looks a lot like your item.

Still reading up on Bauxite this mornin with coffee. The more pics I look at the more I'm still thinkin Dougie was on point. But it has lead me to a new species of rock I now want. I've always had an "eye" for different and I thought miss placed rocks. But that's as far as it's went. Never learned about them. Then moved here and found a yuge quartz vein or 3 running through the property. So that got me 🤔 a little harder about the ground which I walk. But this mornin during my much needed research I stumbled across Unakite. Now I feel I need a wild specimen of this👁️

There was a bauxite pit North of Pine Bluff alongside old Hwy.65. I remember it from a child.Alcoa had a smelting plant near Hot Springs if I remember right, been a long time so I could be wrong about that.At one time samples of bauxite ore were common in rock shops and flea markets.I once had some but they got lost as I grew up. Arkansas was once a pretty big player in the aluminum game.
