I was just looking back at some old post and saw yours. Figured I would say a word or two. I bought a 4900 DL when stationed in Germany back in 92, found a great deal with it, and still bring it out from time to time. Takes some practice, but after using it a lot I was able to tell by the sounds if I was hitting a coin or something else. I could find coins down to about 8 inches, but only ones that had been in the ground a 100 years or more. Found several coins from the 1700's, 1800's and a butt ton of newer coins. Great machine for it's time and still fun to use. I had problems with it on the Florida beaches, kept getting false signals. Other than that I liked it.
