Wide variety of pottery shard types and manufacturing styles

Hello,

I recently identified a site in Central Brazil with hundreds (more probably thousands) of ceramic shards of the most varied pottery and manufacturing styles. Below (attached) are some photos (macro - 23 x 23 square cm) and light microscope details (micro - some few square mm) with temper of representatives of these artifacts. The same area has also several stone axes, stone hammers, points, polishing stones, grinding stones, burnishing stones, stone fragments, cave paintings, etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions or comments on these findings?

You have done right by identifying different types or styles
Even the materials used will help nail-down timeline and other info

Interesting finds. I know a little about Brazil, from chatting with Don (who was first Minelab distributor in Brazil). Don is still living there and holding out (have not heard from him in a couple months).

Thank you for your feedback! It is nice to hear that you know a little about Brazil from your chatting with Don. Brazilian pottery is clustered into traditions, but there are several specific aspects related to such findings that are really difficult to classify within some specific tradition or timeline. They are so diverse and they were overall found with the same site and also soil layer suggesting that the same people could use such vessels/pottery.

Yes, of course! Do you have some preference among them? Could you suggest some of those of the photo?

I was wondering about pieces you identified as being connected to sites of older culture. I tried clearing one plain type. See if it helped visibility any.

Thought some would have markings on them. I can see now, is just the porous nature of old pottery.

Don is up around the ranches with gold. Years ago, he had a fly in visit to native chief (for permission to prospect) on a primitive airstrip. Since then, the Indians have forced all non-native miners off their land.

Here is a nugget cache Don found a few years ago.

Sounds like could be name of place in Don's area. If there is gold prospecting, might be.

In fact, this is a microscopic detail from the surface of one of the pottery shards. It shows some of the raw materials used to produce the pottery.

Yes, it is possible to see the porous nature and also some of the constituents. However, in the fragment at the upside right of the first image, you can see that it is a piece with some interesting plastic decoration.

Yes, I know where Tangara da Serra is and it is more or less 1,400 km west of the place where I located these pottery shards.

That would put you in Bolivia unless you are north west of Tangara. That is remote area.
