Wife Decided - It's Rockport

My beautiful wife decided - we're going to Rockport instead of New Mexico or California. Now, does anyone know if Mustang Island State Park allows MD'ing on the beach? Or any area on the north end of PI to hunt? CAPTBIL had mentioned hunting PI, but I can't seem to get back in contact with him. Anyone else interested in a day hunt Feb 16 through 19?

Re: Wife Decided - It's Rockport

you can't hunt within the state park boundary or in the National Seashore. I've never been bothered when hunting open beach.

Re: Wife Decided - It's Rockport

Sqwaby is right about where you can't hunt...but there are 22 miles of open beach from Port Aransas to Mustang SP..then from Mustang SP to the National seashore. Rockport beach is an excellent place to hunt also...it is a very old beach. All other beaches in the area are also open to detecting...North Beach, Magee and Emerald. Don't know how long your going to be down but your welcome to attend the club meeting in Corpus..it is the first thursday of every month. If you get lost or need some directions....drop me an email with your phone #.
Good Luck & HH Kieth

Re: Wife Decided - It's Rockport

Thanks, Keith

We'll only be there a week. Used to go quite a bit when I was young. I haven't been in more years than I care to even mention, and my wife is from New Mexico and has never been. I am sure the area has changed, but I wanted to show her a part of my childhood (of course the beach hunting doesn't hurt!). It will be her introduction to metal detecting, so I am hoping for good weather and some luck. She would make a great hunting partner if she likes it.

The gulf beach is nice to visit....but your bay beaches are wayyy more productive. Also...depending on what kinds of food and price...there lots good choices around here.

Re: Wife Decided - It's Rockport

I'm really looking forward to the seafood again! There are some very good places here in Dallas for fine seafood, but there is just something about smelling the salt air that makes it better.

It has been SO many years since I was there, any recommendations are certainly appreciated.

Thanks, Kieth.

You are right, there is nothing like knocking down some fried seafood sitting on the saltwater. For some like myself a cold cerveza next to it is just a topper!

Hope you guys have a great trip ThTx

After a good morning session my buddy and I would hit up The Captains table for fried oysters and coronas on the way back to the West end. They were not the greatest but man the memories.

Re: Wife Decided - It's Rockport

A couple of places to eat....

Crab'n = just south of town on business 35 about 1/2 south of the hwy 188 intersection. Best Seafood

Los Comales - In town near the intersection of Market St. and Bus. 35. Best Mexican

There are other good places in Fulton.

Hu Dat - as in Dat Nguyen from the Cowboys - family restraunt.

Charlotte Plummers - pricey but good.

I practically live there from March to Nov. Love it there.

If you need any other info on the place...let me know.

Johnny

Re: Wife Decided - It's Rockport

Thanks for the info everybody. I just figured it up - it's been 38 years since I've been there. I guess things may have changed a bit! I should have buried a cache. It would have been worth something by now!

Port Aransas would be worth checking out....the week after spring break
I remember those days gone by....alot of people "celebrating".

Been through Rockport... but may have to stop and hunt next trip.

Can I trade my tabs in for a cold one? I knew they were good for something!

At 60cents/lb those tabs are making me rich......but don't tell anybody,
they'll be keeping the tabs for themselves.
Hey...i may be onto something... a "tabs for a cold one" campaign!!

Re: Wife Decided - It's Rockport

Hi. I lived in Rockport until 1970 then moved to Granbury and now live back in Rockport. I know what you mean about the smell of the salt air here. When your driving toward the coast you can always tell your close when you roll your window down and smell the salt air. If your from here you remember the carbon black plant between Rockport and Aransas Pass. It just recently shut down. Also they redid the main street, Austin st. There's alot of complaint's about the way they made it. It was a wide 2 way by the old barber shop and other old buildings, it's now 1 lane with concrete bulb-outs for head-in parking. A good thing that happened we got our Aquarium back. Hope you get to feeling better, I have had 2 back surgeries both failed. I still manage to detect some, mainly in the water. Cliff
