I don't think it is US. Canadian or possible British. The British use those type chevrons on their uniforms.

British. His collar device is Royal Marines. I believe it is WW2 era

The photo it's self looks older then WW2, It looks more like a photograph from the late 19th to the early 20th century or so it seems to me :dontknow:

He's British, WW1 era, the chevrons on his sleeve are actually service stripes and not rank, 2 stripes = 6 years service....

......... It's on a thick heavy cardboard it was framed I took it out but no info on the back

Could be what's considered a cabinet card and they mostly fell out of popularly by the very early 20th century. Cabinet Card - 19th Century Photographs Could be this fellow saw service in the 2nd Boer War as it seems these cabinet card were pretty much out of use by the 1st ww :dontknow:
