Xterra 705 won't turn on

Has been sitting in closet for a couple years with no batteries in it. Put some fresh batteries in it today and it won't turn on at all. Any ideas?

My first thought is to clean the battery contacts. A pencil eraser is effective getting the oxidation off. Alcohol on a Q-Tip works well too. Good luck.

Thank you. I'll give that a try. It finally turned on a couple times but it's very intermittant. I'm thinking you may be right.
