Relic Hunting
On Friday and again yesterday, I headed back to a site the arkies dug last year. These are some of the relics they left behind for me to find. My first find was a pocket watch key, followed by what I feel based on the decoration style, is an early-Victorian ladies sash buckle. I also found an 1838 Lower Canada Halfpenny and a small bust of what I think may be a young Queen Victoria. I also think this piece maybe silver, as it's extremely black, it may also have come from a piece of Mourning Jewelry. Of course, this is just speculation on my part, it may very well not be Victoria, but just be an image of a Victorian Lady? The farmer showed up to spray the soybeans while I was there on Friday, he told me that ?this John Deere sprayer has 120' boom arms.

When I showed the farmer the halfpenny I found he was excited to hear that I had found it on his farm, so I offered to give it to him after I cleaned it up a bit. He then proceeded to tell me about another site the arkies had dug a few years ago, that I didn't know about. We then took me on a mile long walk to a remote location high in the fields and pointed out where the site was. :hello2: If the weather is good next Friday, I'll head over to the new site. I found the teapot lid at the side of the new site, likely casually tossed aside by the arkies, I'm not exactly sure how old it is though.

Un Sous "Bouquet Sous" 1835 - 38 'TRADE & AGRICULTURE LOWER CANADA' Halfpenny Token
The chronic shortage of small coins during the first half of the 19th century gave rise to a series of attractive copper tokens known as "bouquet sous." In 1835 the Governor of Lower Canada granted the Bank of Montreal the authority to issue copper tokens of good weight to meet the need for small change. The front side of the tokens showed a bouquet of roses, thistles, shamrocks and wheat and the reverse carried the denomination, "Un Sou," hence the name "bouquet sous." In 1836 the Bank of Montreal was permitted to add its name to the legend on the reverse. In 1837 La Banque du Peuple was also authorized to issue "bouquet sous." These tokens became so popular that many lightweight imitations in both copper and brass were soon put into circulation by unscrupulous individuals. The genuine tokens were manufactured in England and in the United States, but the counterfeit pieces were strictly a Canadian product. Altogether there are over fifty varieties of these tokens, several, both genuine and counterfeit, showing the denomination in the very ungrammatical form of "Un Sous." Since these tokens were produced in England this was obviously the work of a non-bilingual die cutter.

Thanks very much for looking,
Dave

Nice finds ! I do think your guess is right regarding young Queen Victoria ! The profile is very close to her portrayal on early coinage . Looks like it could have had a place on a ring , or a small brooch .

Each and every one of those finds is spectacular in it?s own right so I?m not sure which I like best. Probably Vickie. She?s the bomb [emoji6]

I really want to find one of those Un Sous coins now because this ID page seems really fun. A bit hard to see some of the details in pics vs. in hand but if eyes are working it was LC-30F which would be $1000 coin in VG-8 condition. Had some trouble seeing the number of clovers so not sure.

As always, an excellent post my friend..Nice to see the arkies left some for you.. and it shows how karma works when you gave the farmer

your find and he led you to a new potential.

The sash buckle is tops in my mind.. I found mine in a rough and tumble old mining town out here on the island

Congrats! You sure find a lot of coppers. I really like that young "Victoria" piece, whatever it turns out to be. I think I found one of those watch keys and threw it away not knowing what it was - oh well. Good luck on the new spot; look forward to seeing your finds from there.

Thanks for your post Matt.
These guys are great and they're very aware of the history that's being lost to residential development in this area.
Dave

Thanks Arg, this was my first thought the moment it popped up... a young Vickie. :laughing7:
It was definitely set into something, maybe a ring or a pendant, as the edges are beveled on both sides.
I haven't attempted to clean it yet, but if it turns out to be silver, I just may have to get it mounted in a ring.
Hope you're keeping cool in NM,
Dave

Thank you Sir. :icon_salut:

Great Finds!!
Thanks very much ER.

You know what I just noticed... are those two teeth???? :tard:
Yup, probably cows teeth, I find them on almost every site I detect. :laughing7:

The brass piece cleaned up well. Great hunt. Congrats!
Thanks PA-NC :icon_thumright:
I like the look of the green verdigris as well, but for some reason I can't resist restoring it either.

Thanks for your post and for the info Dallas. :occasion14:
I understand that there are 70 varieties of this particular coin, having been made by many different individuals.
This TRADE & AGRICULTURE variety doesn't pop up very often, so it's nice when it does.
I gave this coin to the farmer yesterday as a thank you, he really appreciated it too.
Dave

Thanks for your post Micheal, I don't see you on here very often. :hello:
I think it's so important to remember to properly thank and to show our appreciation to the generous folks who trust us on their land. In fact, this afternoon I dropped by the farm office to give the 'Un Sous' to the farmer and his brother and we ended up chatting for 90mins. While I was there I noticed a number of hand-made walking sticks in the corner of their office and complimented the owner on how beautifully-made they were. He told me, "he makes them from branches of Curly Maple he finds growing on his property." He then offered to let me choose one to keep. He said, "that his daughters would be upset about him giving one away, but he appreciates me sharing my finds with him." I'll post a picture of it at the end of this thread.

That's one of the most beautiful buckles I've ever seen Micheal, you're so fortunate that you have both halves.
Dave

sounds like quite the adventure and a new spot to go to nice going
Thanks Mark :icon_thumright:
I always have trouble sleeping the night before I detect a new site, I'm sure tomorrow night won't be any different.
Best of luck to you and Bart in Florida,
Dave

Congrats on great hunt Dave. Nice offer to give up coin!
Thanks for your post Chuck.
I find that a little generosity goes a long way with the folks who give us permission to detect their land.

You should see the amount of 'modern trash' the arkies leave at these sites when they're done as well. Smashed blue recycling boxes, food wrappers, empty plastic water bottles, plastic buckets, torn dis-guarded tarps and the list goes on and on... these people really are environmental pigs! :sadsmiley:

Nice bunch of finds, congrats!
Thanks for your post oldmxrat.
Hope you're keeping cool in NV.

Thanks very much Steve, this year has been a good year so far for pre-1920 large cent finds.
I must be close to 20 coppers since my first hunt on March 31. :icon_scratch:

Sorry to hear that you may have tossed a pocket watch winder away, I'm sure we've all tossed a find in the scrap brass bucket that was actually a keeper.
Interesting though, since finding my first watch key in 2014, I hadn't found any others until 2020... I've found three this year alone. :laughing7:
Best of luck to you in MA,
Dave

Super cool finds Dave. You certainly found a bag full of Goodies. I particularly love that bust piece. It’s a very attractive piece for sure. I also love that half penny token. It must have been an exciting hunt for you. Can’t wait to see the finds from your next trip!

More very nice finds there Dave. Another nice bank token :icon_thumleft: . I usually don't get too worked up over sash buckles but that one is just a beauty!

Thanks very much for your post FF, my only wish is that I'd found this homesite earlier. :icon_scratch:
I first detected this site for 5hrs in the spring of 2020 before the arkies arrived, but the finds were minimal.
It actually took the arkies moving around the soil for the finds to start popping up.
Best of luck in FLA,
Dave

Hi Jeff, thanks for your post.
This sash buckle is probably one of the most detailed I've ever seen, thankfully my camera phone is able to pick up the details.
Maybe I should've left the verdigris on the face... but what's done is done right.
Good luck to you,
Dave

Awesome finds!!! Congrats!!!
Thanks buddy.
