2009 Coin Recap
2009 was one of my best years for numbers, but would prefer quality over quantity anyday, however it was nice to find a great number of coins, especially a high amount for me and my son for the early year coins.
Between my son and myself 27 coins from the 1700s and earlier was a good year for us. My son hunted very little this past year due to other obligations but the few times he did get out he usually found a few oldies each time.
My highlight for this year was really the best button I found, but it was a year of a couple of firsts in the coin department.
My first Condor Token, my oldest copper ever found, my first Pillar Half Real, which are hard to come by, and a couple of seconds that are noteworthy, my second 1793 Half Cent, which is more toast than coin, and my second 1835 Hard Times Token - Walsh's General Store....
I do not have photos of all the coins, due to a few computer problems, but gathered together enough of them to satisfy what was a good year.
1680's Charles II Irish Halfpenny, my oldest Copper found to date.
Three William III Halfpence
A heavily worn 1736-60 Irish Halfpenny
1734 KGII Halfpenny
1739 Pillar Type Half Real, my first one out of quite a few Half Reals I have found
Two KGIII Halfpence, the one Halfpenny is a 1775 counterfeit known as a Long neck variety
I guess a highlight of the year would be getting three different state coppers!
A Heartbreaker find - A 1793 Half Cent, my second one, but dang, it is toasted!
Another first for me, a 1795 Yorkshire Condor Token, still a decent amount of detail, included a photo of what a good one looks like!
Two more Half Cents for 2009, the 1797 Liberty Cap was found the same day I found the Irish Union Greens button and kind of got overlooked for finding such a nice Half Cent.
Two decent Draped Bust Large Cents, the 1798 was a bit unusual in that the same site my son found two 1798s, three from one site, kind of neat.
This mutilated Large Cent was found in a heavily iron infested site and was really deep, but I was surprised to see the initials of MF on it and muttered under my breath when I saw the condition. But I was happy to at least see the ONE CENT and some wreath leaves which allowed me to say it was most likely an early year Coronet Type Large Cent.
More finds continued on followup post.

Re: 2009 Coin Recap
Continuing on with the 2009 finds:
A 1810 Classichead Large Cent
Two 1812 Large Cents
A decent 1828 Large Cent
1835 Walsh's General Store Hard Times Token
1842 Seated Liberty Half Dime
1876 and 1886 Seated Liberty Dimes and a 1873 Indianhead, all found in the same hole.
That is all the archived photos of my coins finds that I cold find, which is the vast majority of the finds, only a few newere Large Cents and one Barber Dime and a few Indianheads not included.
Here are a few of the coins my son found.
A 1798 Draped Bust, found same site as my 1798 Large Cent
Another 1798 Draped Bust, again found at the same site as mine and my son's other 1798 for the year.
1794 Liberty Cap which I know has to be his favorite find for 2009, rather decent shape, so I know he was happy finding it!

Overall a very good year and only wish that 2010 can come close to it..............

Don,
Amazing display, as always. I long for your half cents, condor tokens, and sugar sand conditions.
Awesome year, and can't wait to see what you and your son post in '10.

Re: 2009 Coin Recap
Don,
You definitely had a year to remember. The 1680s Charles II is on my wishlist. It could happen, considering PA dates to the early Colonial period.
I want to wish you a quick melt and a super 2010 season!

Re: 2009 Coin Recap
That is very cool getting a few firsts. I can't believe it's your first Brit trade token! But I can believe the pillar real because I am still waiting for an example of that type. Dan really scored a nice one with that 1794!
I guess you've never dug an early French copper like a Double Tournois or Liard?
PS.... My first condor came the first day I found some old coppers and think about 3weeks to a month into detecting. Amazing how much we can have in common but be so different at the same time.

Without a doubt the first Condor for me, not sure if my son has found one or not, don't think so, but he has several French coins, of course the Douzain, but also a couple Liard's. I may have found one in 2009, all indicators are there except a detail to ID for sure, so I just never showed it.
The only French I ever found was a 1774-89 One Sol.
The Pillar Half Real is not posted too often, most all Half Reals are the Bust of Charlie I do have a Pillar 2 Reale and two Pillar One Real's.

I am pretty sure I read the Pillars were more common but the finds tend to point the other way. Actually that might have been 8 reales only and we don't see enough found to really make a good judgement.

I definitely mean the Half Real Pillar, they seem to be rather scarce, One Real and Two Reale do appear on forums more often, the Half Real, not sure I have seen too many at all. Out of about 40+ Spanish silver we have found, I have one and I am not sure but I think my son may have one Pillar Half Real.

What kind of $$$$$ are those coins worth in that buried-dug condition? Ruck
