Ok none of the above are oil

Hey Nick,

The 1917 Girl in Green Reading is oil on canvas.

Your painting appears to be a very small one, perhaps a miniature. Is that correct? Is it oil on board? Is there some sort of spillway beneath that fantastic structure?

I do not believe it is the work of Pascin. The subject matter, the style of painting, and the signature, just do not jibe with his body of work.

There's 100 of his works organized in a timeline here: Jules Pascin - Artworks His Cuban scenes do not remotely look like your piece, in my opinion.

Yes its 5 by 7 with spill on the edges of the board not sure but theres a frame label on the back that appears to be from the 40s thru the 60s and yes i agree the work doesnt compare but he did produce thousands of peices in many styles and frames of mind i will post a picture of the label so maybe we can get a time period of the frame work

Pascin in NYC
Pascin was very active in an artists organization existing
from 1917 through at least 1919 called The Penguin. This
was pulled together by Walt Kuhn and included most of the
younger modernist artists not affiliated with Steiglitz. I have
aPascin print of a Penguin dinner that is fabulous and the
Archives of American Art has another. Pascin exhibited with
the group as well as being part of an inner circle that
organized costume balls and themed dinners and concerts
that were highly Bohemian. I am writing an article on the
Penguin that will appear in 2011 in the Archives of American
Art Journal.

J. Pascin
I've also recently acquired a similar item - 8x10" oil on wood
of wintry (apparently European) landscape, signed "J.
Pascin". A pencil notation on the auction sticker on the rear
implies it had been sold in1974 for $40. The signature is
different than the usual Pascin signatures on his
watercolors, drawings and graphics, as the lettering is
printed (vs script) and the initial "J." is included. Iassume
this may be attributable to the difficulty of writing in script
using oils. As Pascin was not terribly collectible until
relatively recently, I cannot see why anyone would have gone
around faking his work, especially with such an
uncharacteristic subject and medium. Would appreciate any
information or advice.

Ihave small oil painting on wood siigned J. Pascin. I noticed
the postings from a Janice Jackson. Would like to compare
signatures of the artist and discuss. Any other info that
might help us both.

Jules Pascin in America
Ihave acouple of landscapes by the artist, but find research
difficult as the catalogue raisonne was composed mostly in
France. It is a four edition work, but there has never been a
significant amount of scholarship dedicated to his American
works. Souther sources like the Telfair Museum have said he
was in the Savannah area on and off from 1914 to 1917, but
it really is detective work to uncover more information on his
American phase. The archives of American art has his
paperwork from Edith Halpert's Downtown Gallery available
on-line. Read that and you know a heck of alot about the

J. Pascin
Ialso have a painting of a J. Pascin signed in the left corner.
It's landscape with a few people walking done the road. 6" by
8". Appears to be in his style, could this aslo be a "pay the
rent" painting?

Janice Jackson

Jules Pascin
Ihave asmall oil on board of what is a very pastoral scene
but it is signed J. Pascin and the old lady that gave it to me
prior to her death owned many fine pieces of art. She
traveled extensively and collected art and antiques. I am
sure believed it to be his signature. However, it is not his
usual genre'. This I thought might be a "pay the rent" piece
done early own.
Does anyone know if he ever did landscape scenes?
Iwould appreciate any information on what seems to be a
very unique question about this man.

I'm not sure I see the point of this "Ask Art" discussion.

I disagree with the notion that his American work is unstudied. There's 5 volumes to his catalogue raisonne.

51EjTf60zPL._SX258_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg Pascin: catalogue raisonne- Peintures, aquarelles, pastels, dessins, Tome 2: Yves Hemin, Guy Krohg, Klaus Perls, Abel Rambert: 9782906565012: Amazon.com: Books

If you sincerely believe that piece to be a genuine Jules Pascin, get thee to the library, or the Art History Department of your local University.

Hey Nick,

"Sounds" being the operative word, here. That "askArt" site, oddly, seems not to have a photo feature, which seems counterproductive to me.

What can I tell'ya, the Art world, is nothing, if not derivative.

Here another. what appears to be totally different, and unrelated "J. Pascin:"

1172753_120305130849_dbridge3.JPG 1172753_120305130849_dbridge.JPG Watercolours - ORIGINAL WATER COLOUR PAINTING. 'A Bridge in France' by J Pascin. (1917.) Framed. was listed for R750.00 on 20 Aug at 22:01 by The Bedouin in Pretoria / Tshwane (ID:73266365)

Good luck, Nick. As a parting gift, Will'ya take a focused photo of your piece, please.

Here's an 1925 Pascin, after his return to Paris:
