My Bluecross Blueshield cost me $74.00 a month.
Humana

I went to the VA 4 times in my life and i'm just wondering why some of you go.
One of the Medications i take cost $7560.00 a month and is only 60 pills.
Imbruvica .
My copay would have been $1000.00 a month but i got a grant that pays that
and when that runs out next January i hope i can get an other.
I was in Vietnam in the 1966 and was at sea. Since i didn't put foot on land the Va wont pay
and i think my Leukemia was caused from breathing the air and working in the rain in the Gulf of Tonkin .
I think the VA should pay for all veterans Bluecross Blueshield Insurance and close all there hospitals
Than everyone could go to a Hospital like the Mayo Clinic and get good treatment.
You will die at the VA.

Thank you for your Service to our Country RD. In New York, it's over $1,000.00 a month for Blue Cross Blue Shield. Like almost all Vets, I have had problems getting the VA to approve medications. I've been on a blood thinner, Plavix, for several years, and have to get a "special waiver" every year to stay on it.

I use the VA because I earned my benefits, and I can't afford a Senator's health plan. Maybe I should move to Minnesota. :occasion14:

I cannot get an appointment at the not so local VA. Every time I try to get one they are booked out for months and have not opened up future dates yet. Most of the appointments seem to get filled internally once you are there being seen already. They tell me I can come in every day and be on call if there is a cancellation.

Oklahoma's va are often crowded but so far if the appointments are easy to get and they send out a lot of the specialties to local specialist.

I guess age and income have a lot to do with the cost.
Like they say it don't pay to have anything or a big paying job.

I have no insurance except the VA and pay $8 per prescription through the VA. It can be a head ache sometimes getting appointments especially for the pain clinics, but with all the bad reviews in the past few years, they seem to be trying harder to help Vets. My last appointment he doctor did not even ask questions when I asked for another prescription.

I agree with you on that Terry. Except the VA part......... One night at the dinner table, the subject came up. My grandfather (Army) told me "Son you made it this far, if you want to die go to the VA. With my father (USMC mustanger ret.) knodding in the background really woke me up! I grew up a Marine brat, Viet Vet. Never forgot Grand fathers words. Can't say a bad word about ANY of the corpsmen or medics that I've had help me, but Damn! the VA just frightens me.

I have no insurance other than the VA. I used to pay $870 a month for BC/BS (which actually was BS), and it covered nothing. I went in for a check-up and my portion ran to over $10k. I went to the hospital and asked relief and they immediately dropped my share to $2000. No argument! Just shows how corrupt medical care in the USA has become.

The VA saved my life, I have zero complaints. I'd fallen and broken a rib. After the 3rd day I was drowning in the fluids in my lungs. I e-mailed my primary care and he called me asked to come in immediately.

I've 3 appointments this week after 2 last week. My second cataract surgery is Wednesday.

My VA center is in Salem, Virginia. I'd been to the Durham NC VA before switching to Salem. Durham was absolutely top of the line, but Salem was 2 hours closer one way.

Like I said, I'm deeply in their debt. But I also know that other centers aren't cool. I was first assigned to the Detroit VA center....

I've had 11 appointments at the Salem VA since the first of the year. Had my second cataract surgery on 2/15 on my left eye. My right eye lens was made for general vision and the left eye was designed for more close up work. The VA surgeon was actually concerned about that! I can drive at night now for the first time in a number of years.

After my first eye, they sent me kind of a summary on it. That paperwork stated that the cost of my surgery was $120,000. My portion was $60. I'd expect the same from my left eye. 3 years ago they removed 3' of my colon - that's the reason I decided to retire, expected worse coming so why not enjoy life instead of reporting to work 5+ days a week. That colon surgery? $60....

Salem, Virginia is certainly taking care of me! I know it's not the same everywhere. But I certainly expect it to get better for everyone now that there's a new sheriff in town.

Keep the faith!

The VA has taken care of me through, first a heart attack, then a couple of years later stage 4a throat cancer. I have no complaints, they have twice saved my life. Appointments for minor issues may be a little slow to come but life threatening issues are take care of immediately. The VA here in Kerrville and San Antonio are outstanding facilities and I would choose them over any other hospitals in the area.

My sister also had cancer, not the same cancer as myself, at about the same time as I did. She had expressed pity for me that I had to "settle" for treatment by the VA while she was getting first class treatment at MD Anderson. I am approaching four years NED (no evidence of disease), only one year from being classified as cancer free. My sister did not survive her cancer, she was buried almost four years ago.

I have total confidence in the local VA and prefer it to any local alternative.

I hate that some, maybe even most, VA hospitals give the rest a bad name. And I hate even more that some of my fellow veterans receive less than adequate care. I do wish that the bad facilities did not exist and they were called out by name rather than lumping them all as VA. Not all are bad, or even close to it.
