Coinshooter,Ithink your ring finds are great!! Hope it picks up for you soon, they will be swimming soon HE HE.I detect fresh water lakes as the ocean is three hours west of where I live. And up here you have to go to east bay regional parks and get a permit for 30.00 dollars a year to hunt the ocean beaches and parks,do yoy have this happening down there??
Full pouches to you!!!

Actually those are pretty good finds. Since I stopped using my White's Spectrum at the beach (don't EVER buy one of these for beach detecting, it was my first detector, so I just didn't know better, but it's a great park detector, doesn't do very good near any water though) and bought a MineLab Sovereign XS-2a Pro, I have found a ton of gold. I have had this detector for about 1.5 yrs now and have probably found in the neighborhood of 20-25 gold rings of varying gold value from $10 to 300.00. I love this machine! I grew up in Moraga, so I can identify with your detecting problems. We also have the same extortion fees down here. "The Adventure Pass" is just another TAX on the general public who actually owns the land. They say it is for maintenece, etc., but you gotta know it is lining someones pockets at our expense.
The bay area has alot of history that we just don't have down here.
I hear that it is illegal to even use a metal detector in S.F..Is this true?
Seems like this would be an excellent place to find some really nice gold pieces if you could do your research.
Well, won't be long before the beaches start filling back up down here.
Happy hunting! CS D

You don't have to pay to hunt the parks, just park in them, right?
I usually just find the free spots outside these areas and walk in.

Coinshooter, have been busy on anouther forum....I live in Valley Springs, near Jackson or Sutter Creek where the first gold in california was found. I do commute to Oakland 4 days a week (yuck) so I am in the bay area a lot. I dont know about the S.F. thing but if they ever rip uo a sidewalk or building I would sure like to be there...The places you need that permit here are for all East Bay Regional park lands which is almost any park or beach so I stay up in my area in the free to use B.L.M. lands and Army Corp of Enginers lakes and lands. I dont mind paying 30 bucks a year for E.B.M but do not have much time down here to hunt just work.Good luck and great hunting to you.

Try that Lake I mentioned. It's just above Berkely, right next to the freeway as you go up towards the Caldecot Tunnel. Could be worth your time (if you can get there on a lunch hr.). CS

The lake you talked about could be vary good, I have been there long ago, used to live in Concord, Pittsburg, Oakland and Hayward so know the area as I used to remodel houses all over the bay area. Im not sure but I think it falls under the east bay parks and rec also...I just hate spending 30 dollars if Im not going to use the permit vary much..Was going to detect today as Im off 3 days a week but forgot I had carpet installers comming at 8:00 maby they will finish fast and I can get out later in the afternoon???? Have you hit those beaches anymore???

FULL POUCHES TO YA !!!!

More Gold!

Went out Weds after work to the beach and found a really nice mans 14Kt Gold chain link bracelet with a name plate across the top. No name on it, so I guess I am going to keep it. This is my largest gold find to date (22.7 grams). A good chunk of gold. Sure beats going out and digging two tons of dirt to run through your drywasher and then finding out it has maybe ten dollars worth of gold in it.
I also found a nice mex silver dolphin ring (very common here) and a very unusual find, a pair of rusted handcuffs.
I haven't tried cleaning them up yet. At the end of this hunt I got the creaping crud sickness that has been getting everybody sick down here.
Everyone at my work has been getting this flu-like virus. It knocked me out for about five days. I am glad to be back and alive again, but I missed my local detecting montly meeting.
How bout you any good finds? Jackson area must still be covered with snow.
Take care.

Coinshooter, nice finds good thing there was nothing attached to the handcufs!!!! Im alittle down the hill from Jackson so no snow here did have some lighting thunder and marble size hail last evening. Got to the lake for two hours in between the clouds and got about 6.20 in change and one ring .925 silver thought it had diamonds all around the band but when cleaned was just diamond cut silver, oh well next time. The wife still snapped it up for her own!!! If you go to the prospecting section of this forum I do have some pitcures posted if you want to look?? Last summer I was hunting a old mining camp and found a old octigon barrel pistol wood all gone still researching it but I know it was a flint and powder type.Oh yea are you the same coinshooter thats on the Bounty Hunter forum????
Good luck and full pouches to you!!!

No on the Bounty Hunter Forum. I have a Spectrum XLT and a minelab Sovereign. Just bought a 15" coil for the Sovereign and will try it out tonight at the beach.
I saw those pics. Awesome! One word of advice though. You gave enough info to someone who may have been determined to find exactly where you went (or enough just to stake a claim on) Did you put a claim on this or is it on private land? First rule of treasure hunting is to always keep them guessing. I would suspect that if you go there again, you may find someone has beat you back there. If you do make it back, you might look for the old dump or privy. Could be lots of valueable stuff there.
These are the kind of pics that give me the wanderlust and make me want to be single again, so I could just take off for a week at a time and go find some of these places!
Let me know if you want to trade any rock for that huge gold nugget lol I am a rock collector and have a wide variety of materials. HaH.
Great job. Looks like in this case your puoch was full!
'Take care,

Coinshooter, good advice , as you could see from the pictures I also collect rocks minerals dig dumps and prives and have a room full of mining artifacts. Also I learned long ago not to be totaly truthfull about discriptions of places I have found or been to for just the same reasons you brought up....So Ha Ha to anyone who may be haveing funny thoughts you will be going nowhere fast, wrong river? waterfall? upstream? downstream? Moma did not raise no fool...As for any and all gold sorry thats my retirement nest egg and is in a safe deposit box just waiting for the price to hit the right spot also all my rings silver and gold are also there, after all one break in at the old homestead could really hurt. They would have to cross 5 acres and 4 big dogs to get to the house but you never know...Yes I do have a Bounty Hunter it was my first a gift it stays in the truck as my spur of the moment detector not too worryed if it gets taken...Also have a Fisher Gold Bug 1,and now a Tesoro Eldorado just have to figue out how to swing two at a time and still dig??? Got to the lake for two hours between the rain drops 6.20 in clad and one silver.925 ring tought it had diamonds but was just diamond cut all the way around, now in the wifes special stash, well with all she gets she never hollers when I want to go..Good luck with the new coil that monster will help cover alot of ground.
May the beach be good to you!!!

Woops already told you about the lake, the mind is the first to go!!

Beach hunting

Well, beach hunting was pretty lame. Once spring break starts maybe it will pick up. I can't help feeling that alot of $ is being missed due to the fact that our military is over doing a great job in Iraq. They tend to go to the beach and have some good parties where alot of coins/misc ends up in the sand. San Diego is a little slower right now with alot of folks gone.
I travelled about a mile of beach and found only about $1.40 in coins and some sort of voodoo ritual shrine thing in the sand with some jewelry attached, but I wasn't going to touch this thing. Someone went to alot of trouble to put it together. I did make my trip worthwhile though. I saw some drunk getting arrested for something. About this time I was going along and came upon a large yellow carpet knife with the blade open in the sand. It was fairly new and I suspected it may have been the drunk's, but since the cop already had the guy in custody for what looked like drunk in public, I figured I would make it his lucky day and keep the weapon (I liked it and din't have one yet that was that nice). I thought the drunk guy may have thrown it when he suspected he was going to be arrested. Other than that, I can't figure why this knife would have been where I found it. Although, one of our club members found a stick with a chain attached, with a padlock on the end that was an obvious gang weapon. Sometimes you find the weirdest things at the beach!I think this would be a fun catagory to add to this board. Maybe I'll post something along this range.
Keep in touch.
CS wink

Sounds like you had an interesting day at the beach....Things will pick up as the weather gets hotter. I dont think I would have touched that added attraction to the beach as well, you never know!!! Read your outher post on the foil, drives me crazy as well, thought for sure I had a half yesterday only to pull up a small cap liner that almost knocked my headphones off my head..I think they are here to stay and probley not much we little people can do to change the world..If people would only pack out what they pack in, they can carry it in full but cant take it out empty...Well Im at work and better stop for now and do what I get paid for ,good luck to ya and good hunting...

Minelab Sovereign Elite??

Coinshooter....
Just getting into my retirement money making hobby...
Trying to decide what detector to buy...
Looked at the White's MTX BUT also at the Minelab Sovereign Elite...
Noticed that you have a Sovereign, could you be more detailed in your results.... The Elite offers a 12.5 inch EXelerator coil for $150 more at the KellyCodetectors web page (seems like they have the best prices)...
I will be searching a man made 26 mile long beach here in South Mississippi, probably a lot of foil & pull tabs....
Many thanks,

Our club had a club hunt at the most popular beach in the area on Sun. There were about ten of us and we didn't even find 100 coins total.
The best find was a small mexican silver .925 butterfly ring. Not impressive, but good enough as the best find to win the guy a silver half.
Hopefully spring break this week will change the issue a little bit.

Well, went out this morning for a while. Found $1.40 wu hoo! in about 1 hr.
Still keeping up with my average. Where can a guy go have fun and still get paid about $1 hr? I guess it's those nice pieces of jewelry that make it all worhtwhile out here. I am so jealous of the nice old coins and stuff they find back east. lol
Last week I went out and found about $2.00 in change. Some guy came along and told me his mom lost an earring that she had had for 30 yrs and asked if I could find it. I was hesitant because something like that could fall off anywhere and the size usually isn't worth trying to deal with in a sand scoop. He said he would pay me to look, so I figured I'd give it a try (sure beats picking up pennies). After about 20 mins, I found it. He called his mom and she thanked me. She was so happy to have a full set again. I was going to take off, but the guy said he would pay me so I stayed around just a little bit longer. He kind of flaked and figured I would say, "Awe just forget it", but at that point, it was the principal of the thing.
He finally said do I owe you anything? I told him a few buck for my time would be nice. He ended up coughing up $5. Don't get me wrong though, most of the time I would just have said "forget it, it was my pleasure to help you out". but he was trying to get out of giving me anything after he said he would. In any case, I made about $7.00 that day for 2 hrs of hunting. $3.50 / hr!!!!! Maybe I'll try this for a living! At least I might lose a few pounds. wink

Hi slim,
Went to the beach saturday. Was having a slow day even though there were about 1000 people when I started. I found a few coins when I sttarted and then it got really slow. I figured for sure that when most folks left I would start finding more, but it just didn't come out that way. I guess there nees to be at least 10-20 good days like this for the beaches to fill up. In any case, I kept going and was passing near some people near a lifeguard tower when I got a signal. A new coin popped out and they just kept coming, then a really nice 10K ring, then a silver ring with a really nice opal, then another silver ring. All totaled for that day I found 3 silver rings and one 10k gold ring. Not too shabby for one day. Let's hope it keeps up.
