Beach Treasures 002.JPG 5th of July. Crowded beach the day before and many people out this day. I found my most rings ever in a single hunt (7 hours). I followed the tide out. Also found about $4 in clad and lots of junk. Only 1 tiny 0.9g 10k gold ring. 1 stainless steel, 1 Titaniem, 1 junk (marked 14k ???) with lots of fake ice, and 2 silver (one a spoon handle ring and one a woven band). fake 002.JPG Lots of exercise, lots of excitement. A good day but not much gold.. The junk ring looked good in the scoop at first glance, except for the copper showing through. It had the right mark (14k) but looks like 9.5g of junk. I tested it and it showed up as 10k by my acid test kit. I said to myself, I wonder if it is pladium plated rose gold so I tested a piece of copper wire scratch on the stone and it too showed up as 10k. Bottom line, it looks like junk to me. Has anyone else tested copper and found it to show up as 10k or is my test kit off???? Hope all your hunts are golden.

Man I bet that looked good in the scoop. I recently got a 10K ring that had that same "copper" look to it. Thought to myself...crap. When I got back to the car I started rubbing it with a towell and instead of the gold continuing to rub off the copper dissappeared and the white gold began to show through. From what I've read on this and other forums the alloys will sometime leach through the gold. Depending on age and the gold/alloy ratio. It's possible that that's why you're getting a positive test for 10K.

Or it could just be a plated piece. Either way it's a ring that would have made anyone stand up straighter in the water.

All rings have vaiue when you count the fun you got from finding them and you have to admit, going detecting saves you from doing lots of chores the lil wife cooks up. You just can't sell junk rings for much but they make OK gifts to kids.

Congrats on that 10K small gold ring.:hello2:

Bummer on the one marked 14K ...I must admit it doesn't look good...but maybe it is worth trying to rub on it?

try not to say "only" with a haul like that - you got small gold and silver
there are alot of guys out there that would kill for that
I'd trade my last outing for it - where i got $2.50 in change - 6 junk earings and 2 junk necklaces
and I know guys that wont mind even that
Nice finds :icon_thumleft:

so true, gold is a blessing for any hunt, a gold day is a good day, I too was skunked today making barely $2 -but at least I cleaned the recent trash in one of my favourite water spots!

If you have a precision scale you can try to find the relative density or the ring that will most likely tell you the material it is made of.

Don't toss it in the junk jewelry pile yet.
I have found marked pieces that look terrible, pitted and corroded bad.
I think the alloys used in the gold may be leaching out.
Try buffing it and see if it comes back to life.
I have clad quarters that the copper in the wafer is corroding away.
Research gold alloys and you will see the different metals blended in karat gold.
Jewelry stores only us 14K acid to test. Gauging the rate that the gold dissolves.
The stones do have prongs holding them in place.

HAVE THE RING TESTED!! Most white gold rings are yellow gold centered with "PALLADIUM" Plating cause it shines better than white gold...in order to get the palladium to stick to gold the gold is copper plated first!!! HAVE IT CHECKED!! use a file to take off the upper coating then test!! My fingers are crossed for you...did you test the stones????
