i may be going to the nagshead area soon and am wondering if there are places where you are not allowed to beach hunt, id hate to book a place and find out i have to drive 20 miles to go do my thing. also may end up in the charleston, sc area.

buf, you are good from roughly where the beach road ends in South Nags Head and north all the way to Corolla. South of the end of the beach road is the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and is off limits to detecting. The park rangers don't play, they will confiscate your gear if caught. Well grizj, this info. certainly seems to conflict with bufaloelectric's answer (that the south-of-Corolla stretch can be detected). And your lack of having "your gear confiscated" by those park rangers that "don't play around", seems to conflict with eathabs answer. Thus your not having had any problems, seems to mean you didn't ask enough bored desk-bound bureaucrats, enough questions, with the right combination of buzzwords. Eg. : be sure to mention holes, treasure, ARPA, indian bones, etc...., and then .... sure, you too could have found yourself a "no".

Tom, it is allowed north of Corolla. Corolla is the farthest most town on the Outer Banks, next stop would be the state line if you had a beefy 4x4 as the paved roads go no farther.

just hunt from the 18th mile marker north as far as you want to drive.

once u reach corova u are getting close to as far north as u can go...............do not confuse corolla with corova....corova is north of corrolla.......watch out for the horses and do not get tooooo close. they really to not like people to close to them...(not the horses) the powers to be in n.c.

Max, I stand corrected and you are right about the wild horses. Do you still need a 4x4 to get into Corova?

Metal Detectors: 36 CFR 2.1(a)(7) prohibits use of metal detectors in all national parks.

So if you stay out of the park area you can hunt until your hearts content, or your bag is full.

VA/NC state line (there is literally a fence on the beach)
Corova (wild horses hear, local houses stay away from, lots of these folks don't want to be found, be respectful)
Corolla (paved road ends and sand starts 4 wheel drive needed)
