CRUSTY COINS

What to do with crusty clad. Well you can always roll it up and dump it at the bank. You can also put it in a rock tumbler (if you have one). Heck, one of my friends used to put it into drink machines and press coin return and shiny coins would come out.
What I like the best (did it only once) was the time I lived on Vancouver Island (B.C.) and after a wicked winter storm, which cut away the beach(low tide) and in a few days I came up with $342 in change. The only problem was that the change looked like swiss cheese!
So I went to a government owned casino, plugged 300 bucks in a VLT, then pressed "Cash Out" and collected crisp bills.
That's my payback to the Prime Minister for creating GST!
Good luck to all.
Dave.

If it recognizeable at all as a U.S. coin and doesn't have so much crust on it as to make the coin too thick, I just roll it up and take it to the bank. When I get there, I tell them that the batch of coins I am cashing in is from metal detecting and is kind of crusty and not to use it in their drawers. I tell the teller that they should send the batch back to the mint for destruction. They usually have no problems with that and pay me out without even opening them up. I did have to re-roll about 4-5 rolls of pennies though because I had rolled them in regular paper. She was even kind enough to give me a whole new wad of coin rolls when I left.
Another guy in our club just keeps a jar of these coins, and when he goes to restaurants, etc. He just lays them on the table for tips, etc. He's a really popular guy around town!
I have a large coffee can of coins that I have tumbled that are not really rollable, when I have enough in poundage, I am going to send them back to the mint. I may even approach others in my club about this since it takes a substancial amount (by weight) to be able to cash them in. Of course shipping will eat up alot of any profit, so there is definitely some negatives and positives here. When I can figure out my scanner a little bit more and find the article I have, I will post it here on how to cash in these coins at the mint.

Well, it only took me 9 yrs, but I found it.

The info can be obtained from the US Mint Philadelphia Branch.
If the nos are still current, here are a few you can try
215 597 4984
215 597 4983

If anyone has any current nos. please post them.

Mutilated coins can be sent to:

US Mint,
ATTN: Coin Redmption Section,
Box 400
Philadelphia, PA

Coins need to be at least a pound or more, seperated into their denominations.
Payout is less than face value, but it's still better than sitting in cans in your garage.

Good luck.
