Use salt and white vinegar ,way way safer . Cover with vinegar add a little salt shake up , cleans all your coins ( don't mix penny with clad ) this solution is so safe you eat it.

Until the salt is gone. About 1 to 2 teaspoons. This is also safe if you have kids.

I used this stuff to clean about $400 in clad all at once. I just dump the coins (less pennies) in a 5-Gal paint bucket. Dump in the bottle of Lime-A-way Gel, rock the coins in the bucket back, forth, and around for about 2-3 minutes, rinse out, and the coins are good to go.

SnoBol & Lime-A-way Gel is pretty much the same thing, they both have Hydrochloric Acid.

And, for the last year or so, the 99-cent store has had the Lime-A-way Gel, so you can't beat the cost.



Note: About 5-10 percent of the clad may need a second round. Some of my really green old saltwater clad needed a second round

This stuff might work good ,but is it safe ? NO !! It's not safe for my dog or cat or the kids or the drain when you dump it out . My solution is safe all the way around.

Be responsible Ron! ... Like you would with any household or garage chemical ... Geez Ron ... Your not supposed to drink it!

It's made for cleaning toilets, hence the word, GEL, so your drain theory is in the sewer

I use the Sno Bol on my clad, usually thin it a little with some water. Works great and just leaves a little white tint. Some of the worse coins take a little longer but it's a pretty quick process, takes very little at a time.

Hi Flex68 ... Vinegar is Acetic Acid and Toilet Bowl Cleaner is Hydrochloric Acid. There is no comparison with the speed and the quality of the clean on even the most corroded coin.

Vinegar and Salt (Acetic Acid) works best in a tumbler for 20-min or so. With SnoBol & Lime-A-Way (Hydrochloric Acid), it works in a few minutes swishing 100's of dollars of coins around in a bucket. You would need a big tumbler to clean 100's of dollars of coins at the same time.

So if you have a tumbler, the time, and do small batches, Vinegar & Salt would be a way to go.

It really doesn't matter which acid you use in terms of the environment. Makes no difference. An environmental scientist I once knew told me "The secret to pollution is dilution."
Just add water.

I appreciate all the input. I have a couple hundred dollars in zip-lock bags waiting to get cleaned so I can take them to my bank and put them through the change counter with a clear conscience. I looked for the Sno Bol at the grocery without success. They did have Lime-Away but since I didn't know the chemical make-up of the sno-bol, I didn't get anything. I will take my quarters and a five gallon bucket and try the vinegar and salt process tonight. I will see how that works before I try something stronger and more caustic.
