Is My Excal Dead Or Alive???

I was so excited,when my package arrived from Mr.Plugger today,that means I'm gonna be using my Excal
As I looked very careful @ my Excal ,I noticed the rust on my Excal

Is this normal or is my machine dying on me Can I still use it,looks like corrosion to me:roll

Hi Kiana I think you will like the straight shaft. As for the plug, use a stiff brush to clean it , do not turn the posts they have nuts and wires on the other end. clean the rubber seal check it for cracks, then put silicon grease on and it should be OK . that is usually caused from leaving the battery plugged in all the time, try unplugging your battery when not using it. this will let the water that is trapped in it out and it will dry. on occasion pull rubber seal off and re grease.

Ooopsi! Jim is correct, trapped moisture causes that sort of thing. When you look at the flat seal on the plug you'll notice what appears to be two small molded in o-rings that seat into the pin recesses around the pins on both the the pod and the plug - water will often still seep in the flat portion of the seal and eventually work its way to one of the pins, or both, the silicone grease will help to prevent this. You always want to make sure this plug is screwed down snug so that this seal can do its job.

This could also be why you were having some difficulty achieving smooth threshold and machine performance, if this water makes contact with one or both pins then the machine can start acting up, usually noticeable in the threshold first. I use a Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol on both the pins and inside the female contacts from time to time to keep them clean and free of any build up.

Kiana: Even though the Xcal is built like a tank, it is surprisingly delicate when it comes to the connectors and cables. The connector needs to be snug so that it does not leak, but not overtight.
Be careful not to tug on the cable wire or stress it as it is easy to pull the wire from the pin (sigh).
It cost me seventy bugs for shipping and insurance to have one repaired under warranty.
I experienced this corrosion problem twice (first and last time) as I now remove the battery(s) in all of my detectors after use to prevent this from reoccurring. Also, it important to relieve the compression forces on the O rings, while the detector is not being used or when flying.
I found that a small light brass hobby brush (approx tooth brush size) works best to gently remove the corrosion after the rubber seal is carefully pried off and removed (it can be easily torn). The rubber seal should be carefully cleaned in mild soap and water. It is important to use SILICON grease, when you put it back on after cleaning.
As my seal kept leaking, I swapped it with one of the same type which was on my trickle charger.

My only concern is there is two types of silicon grease one conducts electricity and one does not?
Where do you purchase the silicon grease? Home Depot?

I use bulb grease which you can purchase at Walmart (automotive dept).

It will break down the rubber sooner it later. Divers lube is what you want to use

You should always disconnect the cable that goes to your battery when not out hunting...

I always give mine a shower on returning home from a saltwater hunt with the power cable disconnected to rinse off any salt...

Also use silicone grease found in dive shops or in hardware stores. I put it in the threads of the lock down cap and on the washers it helps stop falsing...
