His name is, Beach Bob, average height, late fifties, slender but powerful, tan skin and scruffy face, eyes that always appeared to be squinting with deep insight. On any given day you could find him somewhere on the beach swinging his machine, scoop over his shoulder, headphones over his ears, mirrored sunglasses perched on his forehead. Around his waist there rested a small mesh pouch, a pouch that nearly always contained silver and gold. This was Beach Bob, the name everyone knew him by, brightly colored Jimmy Buffett muscle shirts, patterned Hawaiian cargo trunks, a gold chain around his neck that displayed a real golden doubloon.

Power, agility and speed, and yet he moved along so slowly, so precise, as if his machine was telling him where to step and when. And in fact, it was. You see Bob's machine has always been mystery, not so much as an identifying mark anywhere on it, not so mush as an “On” or “Off” on any of the machine's tiny dials. On Bob's mystery machine there was no screen, no control box, just one dial on top of the shaft's pistol grip, two more on the side of the shaft just below the forearm cup, and one coiled cable coming out of the end of the shaft leading to the headphones. Someone once said they saw Bob changing coils with just the push of the twist of the small latch in the shaft just above the coil, one coil quickly coming off and the other quickly latching right in. Nobody had ever seen a machine like Bob's before, his unbelievable success and his mystery machine keeping the rumor mills turning. Where were the batteries and electronics? Why was the thin shaft of his machine square tubing instead of round?

It was widely believed that Bob had been a top level engineer for the military at one time but nobody was certain. Some said that he just been a private contractor for the military, someone they had outsourced many of their top secret projects to. One rumor claimed that Bob had even spent time at Area 57 working on top secret military projects. Whatever the truth might be it was certain that Bob had created the machine in his hands, of that there could be no doubt. Seldom did Bob dig a signal but whenever he did it nearly always turned out to be gold or silver, if not platinum. It didn't matter if Bob was chin deep in the water or hunting over the wet sand or hunting in the dry sand, in the course of an afternoon Bob could always be seen digging at least a dozen holes here and there. Sometimes he dug shallow holes, other times his holes were very deep, indeed.

Beach Bob. Is he fiction or is he real? Do you think he's really out there somewhere? Is this the future of the beach and water machine?
