My wife and I are moving there in about a month. I had a question maybe everyone can help answer.

How to get my detector to the island?

1. I own a hard gun case that I cut the foam specifically for my machine. Should I use that case as a checked bag on the plane?

2. I have read of disassembling the entire machine and taking it in a carry on bag. Is this allowed? Will I be questioned like crazy due to the "odd" electronic I have in my carry on?

3. Shipping it. I would rather not go this route as it's the most expensive, but seems to be the safest bet as to my machine getting there in the same condition I sent it.

We were just in St. Thomas house hunting last week. Their busy season is about to start. We made it to the beach a few times but I didn't see anyone detecting. I didn't ask about it, and I don't know why. I do not know if you can metal detect there or not. Guess I'll find that out when we move.

Thanks in advance for any airline travel tips with a detector, or shipping.

Disassemble metal detector and take the control and search coil with you on the plane. Let the shaft in the bag. Very easy:laughing7: Good Luck out there!! We wait the pictures:laughing7:

I would verify with the airlines, but I have flown with the ctx. Carry on the control unit like hamid stated and check the rest in a well packed suitcase. Just make sure they don't lose it.

I have done all 4 methoods, except I used a hard shell golf case, not the gun case. No problem with any airline or TSA. To avoid excess baggage charges ($75 each way, I bought a travel scoop that fit into my suitcase.

With all those restrictions, they should rename it NO NO Bay!
Do you just check in you wallet at the entrance, so that they can help them selves, or do
you just give them what you have when you leave (sarcasm intended)!
Other than that it is a very nice looking sign and they were polite as they did say Welcome.

I would think the sign referred to the actual beach where they have control, not the whole island. I would think you are allowed to metal detect on some beaches, just pays to find out before you take your equipment to a particular beach. Happy hunting!!

My wife and I went to Megan's bay while we were there and I totally missed that part of the sign. There are other beaches on the island. Guess I'll have to become friends with the staff at Megan's Bay! I think I will go with the carry on method, I would be sad if my machine got lost.

Thanks for the replies.

I've carried mine on in a backpack multiple times, it has never even been opened to check. Some countries have different rules, but USVI are US territories, so flying with it shouldn't be an issue. Magens Bay is definitely off limits, but I'd check with a few of the resorts to see if they allow on non peak times (early morning and evening). The locals can definitely fill you in on the dos and don'ts! Frenchman's Cove and Red Hook are areas I always thought would be good when I visited there many years ago.

no problem to fly with it. Hand carry your electronics and pack the shaft, batteries and digger. You can't detect at Megan's from what I understand. I have recently detected at sapphire beach with no problems.

I had no problems at any other beach I was at. Picking were scarce at Coki, Sugar Bay, Sapphire and Secret Harbor.
Enjoy and HH.
