Sorry if this is on the wrong form but I want a durable sandscoop that will last me as long as possible beach hunting. I had a fisher sand scoop and it got warped badly by the sand and now is not useable. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I am willing to pay $100 plus for a good piece of equipment.

Boy you opened a can of worms!

I have a stainless RTG 6" scoop that served me well for many years. Last year I bought a stainless scoop from Sunspot and this thing is a beast! I love it!

Hi all, lets look from engeeniring prospective at scoops.
Aluminum is way softer than Stainless stieel,, all agree?
so DUrability of Aluminum scoop is less than stainless stell.

From this point we can not treat aluminum scoops as good investment for a long time.

Now, what Stainless steel scoops are available? there a a number of them.

I personally use Stavrscoop :

Depth 120mm (4,7")
Height 270mm (10,63")
Hole 10mm (0,4')'
stainless steel sheet metal 2 mm
Weight 1,27 kg (2,8 lb)
Width 204mm (8")
internal pipe size for handle 32mm(1,26")or separate order 30,7mm(1,2")

Further in NEw zealand and in Australia almost every detectorist uses his scoops,
as durability beyond anythign for us. and here is a catch :

They are heavy, add on top of that a Stainless stell handle i use:

So, my advice is to read and compare prices and DATA SHEETS fo all scoops on the market, not jsut rely on someone sayign : BLA BLA is the best
as hunting style, conditions will vary and you might need a scpesific type

I use a T-Rex stainless. Not saying it is the best or anything, it's the only one I have used. I like the floating wooden handle and there is no question about it's durability, I abuse the hell out of it. I scoop in gravel and rocks a lot and it shows no signs of wear. It is heavier, but I am in the water all time and drag it behind me in my left hand. I do this because it shows where my last pass was.

Been wondering, can a aluminum handle be used for a 720 stainless steel scoop or will the diameters not match up?

You can always find a alum handle but why would you want too? It would bend and fall over in the water. Sunspot also has fiber handles.

That answered my next question. But why would it bend if it's the same handle from a RTG scoop? Unless of course it didn't have the same box tube back support that they fabricate in it.

The aluminum has a tendency to turn your hands black that's why I have the S.S. Handle on the RTG scoop!
On the 720i, Sunspot offers a carbon fiber handle that fits it perfectly that clamps and bolts to the scoop.
Although it's expensive, I wouldn't be without it. The CF handle makes the whole set up very light weight and manageable!
I don't have hot rods or the latest mid century modern furniture so I treated myself to the 720i (sounds like a BMW) with the carbon fiber handle!
By the way, I still would like a super nice hot rod!:laughing7:

I bought this scoop last Feb and couldn't wait to try it out once the snow melted. I used this scoop heavy all summer pushing it hard in the Rock and heavy wet sand. It is very durable and tuff. Look online under beach scoop Indiana. I paid 140.00 on ebay.
