In another thread, my buddy, ARRC, was reminding us about just how painful and debilitating that getting spiked by a stingray can be. So I was wondering... would that singer pierce a pair of snake boots? It would be nice to have some form of protection, because you can't always be on guard. One thing it for sure - you'd definitely look like a dork wading around in them. What do you guys think?

I do not know about "snake-proof boots" BUT IF they work for you why not?
Oh, snakes in the water might keep swimmers out and finds down.

I do know that 5 mil neoprene surf boots will not stop the barb. I got hit in ankle deep water in Cancun. The critter cut through 5 mils and into my skin...painful to say the least. I was lucky, no infection set in. I cleaned the wound right away after making it bleed then kept it clean and coated with antibiotics.

Another person I know was not so lucky. She suffered for months and had surgery to remove dead skin and infected areas.

just go with a thick soled dive boot - plenty out there
if price is not an object - and you want top support and protection
NRS Workboot Wetshoe at nrs.com
Ive been wearing these at last few relic hunts where there were swampy areas - made for rocky rivers for kayakers
these also have a thick sole
NRS ATB Wetshoe at nrs.com
I also have these in my collection - thick sole - usually what I take with me to travel - high tops keep sand and coral bits out
sole is thick - don't think ray tail will penetrate - I ve stepped on my fair share
NRS Comm-3 Wetshoe at nrs.com
these ive owned in past also - but on clearance and sizes are limited - of course they are out of mine or id be grabbing another pair
NRS Cross-4 Wetshoe - Closeout at nrs.com
but if he does google search - plenty of other hard soled dive boots even cheaper out there

Have you been stung?

No, and I do not wish to, either. :laughing7: No, it was the story of ARRC's problems after getting stung that prompted me to start this thread.

I have these as well, Don. They didn't have the lace-up workboots in my size when I ordered last, so I "settled" for the ATB. Its a good choice, so I'm happy.

Heh higster...
I have stepped on at least 50 or so stingrays over the years...
Only been hit once...
I grew up in the salt water...
Its rare higster...

BUT... since that day..
If I am gonna be in an area where they are... I wear my K-Swiss tennis shoes.

Worst case scenario with stingray...
You step down...
Stingray plants barb deep in foot...
You are now "hooked" to stingray in fight to death...
Only you are gonna loose... Badly.
This is absolute worst case scenario...
one of 2 things now happens...
Either it shreds your foot in escape with barb... OR
Barb is left in foot... in which surgery is required for removal...

BOTH of these... will change you and the way you walk FOREVER.
You will.. without a doubt in my mind...
Walk with a limp till the day you die.

National Geographic Magazine states that only 2 or 3 people die from stingrays each year.

BUT this is debated statement.

And I quote... from ScienceLine...

"Worldwide, death by stingray is similarly rare, with only one or two fatal attacks reported each year."
