Not sure if today was my lucky day or unlucky day. Since I can't afford to go too far from home I went and hunted one of the two places that are near me. I've never found anything at either of these places until a couple of weeks ago when I found those two rings on the same day at one of the places. Today I went to the second place where I usually do not find anything. My point in saying all of this is... for the newbies and people who get discouraged... don't give up! Keep trying! OK - so I didn't get rich today and I didn't find gold or silver but I'm happy with what I did find. I found 36 cents in clad, the usual junk, a couple of small digging toys, both made of metal with plastic handles and buried deep in the same hole, and I thought I had found a really good find... a child's bracelet. It looked good anyway - for a while. When I got to take a closer look it is just a cheapo, no markings of any kind and the edges are really pretty sharp. I wouldn't put it on any child of mine, but it's pretty and shiny. I'm happy anyway. I got to go out and I found a bracelet. I'm happy.

Good advice Mumszie and it is always nice to get out even if you do not find much. So you got some new digging tools. Nice bracelet but the edges probably got sharp from scraping in the sand.

Mumszie, I'm glad to see that you got out there.  You always do well and we can see you have a nice time in the field.

Newbies and others that get discouraged with the hobby:

Everybody needs to remember it is a hobby.  There are good days and there are bad days.  If everyday was good I guess we would all be millionares.

There is a lot out there to find.  One just needs to be patient and not to give up just because of a few bad days.  I have had many days of just finding a few pennies.  I have even had a few days that I didn't even find one of those.

Again everbody, it is a hobby.  You are out there for enjoyment.  It's not a casino.  Enjoy your time away from normal life.  It's good exercise and it is exciting thinking you might find something good.  Something good could be defined differently by every member on this forum.

Well said! I agree with you with one exception...... I've never had a bad day detecting! I've had lots of bad days not detecting.

Thanks HalfSpeed

I didn't really mean a bad day. Even those days that I just found can slaw, I was having fun, frustrated, but I would rather do that then spend 8 hours behind a desk.

One thing I forgot to add, it is the only hobby that you can make a little money at, even recover your investment.

Have fun.

Those shovels look pretty heavy duty, nice finds. The bracelet looks nice, shame it isnt worth much tho, but, jewelry is jewelry in my eyes :). On the days I get no gold or silver, I am still happy to find just an earring.

It does me good to read the encouragement about patience and persistence. I understand there are days of good finds, days of slow finds, and days of no finds. Part of my enjoyment is finding things, more so than being out. Wednsday morning I found 12 cents in a 3 hour hunt, and was very discouraged. But, I am persisting. I have 4-5 low tide hunts planned for the weekend, and I hope one of them ends my gold curse.

Yesterday I pulled out all of the gold and silver I have found since I started detecting, and my outlook changed a good deal. I have been so focused on finding more, I forgot what I had found. I am working now to change my mindset from not being happy with slow days, to being happy with anything I find. Afterall, if I start with nothing, and end with something, I have made a gain, whatever the amount. The clad I have found in the last 2 months is worth as much as 3 certain pieces of gold combined that I have found - no exageration.

I feel I am being longwinded - point is, Thanks to you all for helping me refocus my mindset to a more positive outlook. Tonight I expect to hunt for 4-5 hours, and get a lot of fresh air and exercise. Hopefully meet a few other detectorists, and find something worth keeping. Be it a penny, or a cheap earring for the collection :).

I knew what you meant. I've enjoyed enough of your posts to know that you have a very positive attitude. Just putting my own spin on what you wrote so well. I just got back from a very hot 30 minute spin with the Eagle. On the front part of our property, there was an old bar/gambling/girls place in the early 50's. It's a bare field now. I've just started hunting it and its loaded with old steel beer cans and broken glass. Only found 1 merc dime so far but I just know that there has to be a load of old silver there. Today I dug up a dozen can tops, an old car battery lug and about 2 pounds of broken glass. My only point was that it still was a great relaxing time. addicted to the beeps I guess.......
