Being somewhat of a Civil War buff I have always enjoyed the writings of Bruce Catton. Although I am missing two books from his series I have grown fond of his The Coming Fury, Never Call Retreat, Terrible Swift Sword, and A Stillness At Appomattox. For me, there has never been a more interesting reading when straight facts were interwoven with personal stories and accounts of the time. I was able to see through the eye of the common soldier.
After that I would go with the Battles and Leaders of the Civil War, written almost in the same style
