The corps of engineers have decided to do some work on our Ouachita (pronounced washitaw) River lock and damn system. From what I’ve heard, these things were installed in the 30-40’s. The river, when not flooded, usually stays at pool stage all summer and winter. It gets scary high during the spring months. In fact, it was at 37’ this past spring. It is currently at 17’. A few years ago while fishing the Monroe bank from my boat I noticed a lot of glass shards behind what was once the Beidenharn Coca Cola building. I thought to myself those guys must have been dumping broken bottles and discards in the river back in the early days. I always said if the river ever dropped in my lifetime I would definitely go check it out and see if there were any early straight side cokes there. So the river is currently 4 feet below pool stage and could possibly be lowered another foot. Anywho, I went downtown today after work to check things out. There was glass and scrap all along the bank for about 30 yards directly behind the old Coke building. View attachment 1611308 View attachment 1611309 View attachment 1611310

You can see the old Coca Cola building here, up the bank from where I’m standing in the middle of the glass shards. This location was in operation from 1914 to 1962. Henry Beidenharn built this building from money he made selling bottled coke in Vicksburg.

I did found an embossed Coca Cola

I found several acl cokes, some acl 7 -ups, a large star soda bottle here.

I also found an unembossed whisky (from the 20-30’s) and parallel next to it a Chero- Cola to my surprise! Not a bad little find.

I also found what I thought was an ink

When I got home and cleaned it I discovered it was a Chesebrough Vaseline jar

Here is the Chero and I’m pretty sure it is BIM, and bottled in Vicksburg.

So, not much to show really but I had a good time anyway. I did find some straight side coke shards and some 1800’s ale/beers dark glass shards with the con caved vases. Tomorrow I am moving downriver a couple of hundred yards to walk the bank of the oldest part of town. Maybe I can post a gold coin and some early mallets tomorrow, lol

I don't think I've ever seen a Bass hunt on here, so this is awesome! And holy smokes that's a lot of shards, there's gotta be more there. I'm so glad that you got out for some glass! Those are all great finds.

Some good finds there, Bass but beware looking on areas impounded by the Corps. They are anti-collector and have been known to collect hi-res video of artifact hunters from over a mile away as evidence to support charges. It sucks and is wrong, but just wanted to let you know. Take care, brother.

Yes, I’m aware of big brother. He has laid claim to all the waterways and has declared that any artifacts belongs to him. Thanks

Thanks, it’s difficult finding places to hunt in these parts

I love it, but then again what’s the darn joy in cherry picking bottles so easily and not digging a hole 7 feet deep and sweating and breaking your back. I mean really! I’m appalled at you Bass! Ha ha ha. Lol. Great stuff buddy. Jgas.

Ok so I’ll post a few more pictures. Didn’t make any great finds but still had a good afternoon just looking around. I found another Chero, this one is a “swirl” bottle and much newer than the block letter slant I found yesterday. In one area I started find older glass medicine shards and other broken glass, ceramic jugs and brick. Picked up a ceramic doll(broken of course) as well. The pictures will show where all these shards were coming from.

As you can see as I kept looking up the bank looking at all the shards and found a shovel and long screwdriver. That’s when I realized a privy was on the edge of the bank and someone had probably found and robbed the good bottles out and left the brokes and slicks. The last photo of the gazebo is the older section of town. As you can see they have hauled in large grey boulders to shore up the bank and stop erosion. This was a heartbreaker because that’s where oldest part of town is. There was a fort there at the turn of the 1700-1800’s.

Thanks sandchip. Did you see the photos where someone has been tunneling into the side of the riverbank? The feds would throw them in jail if they caught them
