Hello there you glass loving, pit digging treasure hunters.
Today we went out to dig a privy on a Circa 1884 house. Looking at the maps I had a pretty good idea where to start probing. Right next to the stables at the back alley sounded good. Within 10 pokes there it was. A 4 by 6 footer and deeper than my 6 foot probe. I felt glass all over the place so I figured it was pretty loaded. So here we go!!
Got down about 4 feet or so and what do ya know out pops the coveted cobalt Dr. Eliels Liver Regulator. Found one a few pits ago. Pretty hard to come by so this was a great start. Continued or trek downward to the center of earth and started to find some old stuff. Some hinge mold Dr. Richmond’s from Saint Jospeh Missouri. Cool finds. The the criers became a thing. One after the other we started to pull out historical flasks that were all smashed. A union clasped hands with L. F. Co. In the lower banner from Pittsburgh. Ugh. Numerous pieces of pint and quart flasks showed. At a certain level it seemed they smashed everything before tossing he bottles in. But we did manage some pretty cool keepers. Then it was on to the next pit.
Just 10 feet away and kinda sketchy. The probe just didn’t feel quite right and the dirt strata was a bit strange. Acted more like a possible well or cistern. But what he heck. We gotta dig it right? Lol. So here we go. We dug our the first 5 feet with nothing to show. Reprobed several times and felt some glass and a bunch of really hard layering down deep. Not sure as to what that was we were about to toss in the towel. Don got to an area where the dirt was changing color but he was smoked and had to take a break. So down the ladder I go.
I scraped away that top Use Layer and it was like Opening up a present. Holy Cow the bottles started showing up like stacked cord wood. One after the other. They were falling out of the piles of dirt and the upper shelf are right onto my rake. A tone of tooled medicines. And the thing of it was we were finding a bunch that were embossed. Usually it’s about 75 slicks to one embossed. This pit they were about one for every two slicks. It was really quite unbelievable. Clearly two different owners of this home and yard. We popped out several local meds and pharmacy bottles. Some of which we had never seen before. And at this point have not been dug before by anyone here. Some Miles Nervines. An Ozomulsion. A Dr. T. W. Craydon for the diseases of the lungs from Cincy. Kendall’s Spavin Cure for Human Flesh. J. A. Richmond’s from Dallas Center Iowa med. Milton’s drug store. Daucherty Sawyer druggist. A Chillas Adler and Coble druggist. A Carters ink and numerous other slicks and drug bottles.
So what we thought about giving up on produced a bunch of goodies. Yes some criers in the mix but hey we will take what Mother Earth has gifted us. Hope you enjoy the pics and be safe out there everyone. Jgas.
