I found this button today in my back yard. I think it is copper. On the back it has the words "CITY BUTTON WORKS NY"
The front has a eagle holding a arrow and a wheat stalk and above the eagle it looks like a sun. the eagle has a shield.
Any ideas of the date? and how to clean it ?

"City Button Works were button manufacturers from 1875 through 1955 in New York and New Jersey. They were in New York and moved to New Jersey in 1923 until they sold out in 1955. This particular button is from City Works New York and therefore was probably made before 1923. Military buttons especially from WWI made by this company are about the only buttons on which their name appears as seen in the Collectors Encyclopedia of Buttons, making these buttons quite rare. It has a wire loop shank backing. "

I Found this info and thought I would pass it on.

Quote from PBK: It's a U.S. Army "Great Seal" general service uniform button, a pattern introduced in 1902 and still in use today."

Very common, but very cool (because I love the buttons).

Clean it with soap and water and a soft brush. Sometimes I use "simple green" or "Kaboom"... but if you want it "as dug", just soap & water and gentle brushing.

It could be as old as 1902 or as new as 1955 I guess.

Hope this helps.
