It's an Iowa state seal button.

It's from the 1880's or so. It has the capital C and small o. in the backmark. Still a cool find

Agreed.
And no Iowa buttons are listed in Tice's "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865"--so Iowa state seal buttons are all post-CW evidently.

I've been digging since '69 and have never heard of or seen a civil war period Iowa button. I guess there could be some out there somewhere though. The Scovill backmark on that button with the captial C and small o in the abbreviation for company is always post civil war and I believe 1880's and later. I hope this is of some help.
