The Lost Adams Re-opened

Does anyone have any info on which area The Pine Cienega Group (involving the late Gene Ballinger) were searching for the Lost Adams Diggings in?

Was the main search area in the Mule Creeek/Frisco area or was it further South towards Glenwood/Cliff/Mangus Springs?

Why look for the Adams when Gotch Ear said that the other site was even richer? The other site is now on patented ground but you could use it to find the Adams. It is also said that you'll need to reverse the "Z" to find it as that is the way it lays out. Over the years I've read many accounts of the Adams and many claims to have found it. Since you're near the malpais why not look for the $250,000 in long green in the crashed Lockheed vega? Good luck whatever you decide to do. Best Regards, SS

Howdy Hardpan, Working from memory here but as I recall the Indian Gotch Ear led the Adams party to the gold and they camped there. He told them the other site was richer but they found so much gold that they paid him and he left. Thus Gotch Ear knew the sites, next to leave was an unidentified German who got all he wanted after refusing to go shares with the others. He left and bought a ranch only to be killed on his ranch by Apaches a few years later. No word on whether he left a written record of the spot or not or whether it would be in English or German. Finally Adams and companion missed the massacre but the companion died during the getaway. That leaves Adams as the primary story teller. Some searchers in the late 70s claimed to have found both spots the richer one being on patented ground and the adams beyond a backwards "z"canyon. Also provided were photos of the haystack buttes and a description of Sno-ta-hay. Don't recall why they didn't work it most likely they couldn't get legal access. Like many other treasures just cause you know where it is doesn't mean you'll ever have a chance to recover it. They did mention that a photograph taken at 730AM clearly showed both haystrack buttes but one taken at the same spot at 1130AM the one on the left was not visible. Maybe explains part of why its so hard to follow Adams directions. Best Regards, SS

AS YOU KNOW, both Gene and his Dad, "John" have passed thru those "Pearly Gates"!
I was with "John" when he died!
I saw and stayed with and Gene & and his wife, a few weeks before he went!
I have know both since '64 !
I regret not asking" John" more of his Phillipino Guerilla days!
As you may or may not know, he was one of those men who told old General, "Bug Out Doug" where he could put his order to surrender!
And! Grabbed a couple of rifles and Went into the hills/jungle !
He was there until the war ended!
I did a lot of field work for Gene over the years!

The $250,000 on the crashed Lockheed Vega is supposed to be on Mount Taylor, somewhere. Just about every inch of Mount Taylor was chipped, dug, checked for radioactivity by prospectors during the early '50s uranium rush to this area. Maybe there's nothing left of the Vega to find, or maybe the pilot died of drinking too many Marqueritas 20 years later in BananaLand. But if that plane is up there somewhere it's almost a lead-pipe cinch there's nothing left of the $250 large.

As for whether the Adams is on patented land or not, I've never seen any evidence anyone really knows exactly where it is. If it ever existed it's probably still out there, as, probably, is the other one near the twin peaks of the legend.

I've known where it was a hundred times or so until I got there, followed by a return to research and poring over maps until I could know where it was again. There's a lot more to the Adams mystery than you get from Frank Dobie or the rest of us who have written books about it, and there's new information cropping up all the time. 10 years ago no one seemed to know the meaning of the word, Sno Ta Hay. Then an obscure book by an Apache named Nino Cochise came to light. A decade ago the location of the pueblo where John Brewer found succor after his escape was a mystery. No existing pueblo met his description. Then it showed up on an 1864 military map, nailing down his route to the Rio Grande. 20 years ago the identity of the 'German' or 'Dutchman' of Adams lore was not known. Now it is. Those are just a few of the 'new' items of information that weren't available to the searchers of the past.

If the Adams was ever out there, it still is. And it probably stands the best chance of being found by a modern searcher than any other lost mine around, just because there's now so much information available about it.

I beg to differ with you about not remembering or going into the History of the Ballingers!
(I am not refferring to John's? WWII episodes. But! What happened to their business, ie: "The Association"!)
Perhaps you have not heard the old saying, "Those who forget history, will soon to repeat it!"

In Apache that meant "just laying there" according to the grandson of Cochise who also told of a hard rock mine called "sno-ta-hay" in Mexico that was worked out and abandoned near their stronghold in Mexico. He tells of the original tribal members each collecting a share of the gold and moving back to the United States after Arizona became a state. Exanimo, SS

my name is Neil Adams i am a new member.
i have been doing research on this lost Adams diggings, that no one can ever seem to refind.
but i have spent the last month or so searching for data on trail and scouting paths that people have taken recently. i believe i am closer than anyone has Been to finding this gold in a very long time.
but the one thing i really need it a map of the searching paths that recent people have taken, looking for this gold. i am sort of counting my chickens and i am trying to find the areas that people have looked so i can make sure i am correct on my discoveries.

if anybody has any data that can help me to find this gold, i am willing to offer them a share of the gold.

i just thought i should throw this out on the board to see if i am going over old trails.

i know it is not my right to offer gold that i do not own. but it might just be the key i need to finally crack this mind teaser open, and put all those lost souls at ease who died searching for this jack pot.

This sounds kinda like the legion of the Lost San Saba silver mine from around here. Turned out that the mine really isn't lost it just was not where they thought it was. It turns out that is was in the next county south. the silver that was mined was then sent to the San Saba Mission which is how it all got confused. Perhaps the location is just not where you think it is.
