Confederate guerrilla John S. Mosby's treasure

I'm trying to trace the route Mosby used to take General Stoughton back to Culpeper.
Can anyone tell me where Club Run (creek)(river)? is, or was?

Here is a story Lost Treasure ran on it in August 1997:

In March, 1863 Confederate Guerrilla leader John S. Mosby captured Union General Edwin H. Stoughton and a large treasure van containing items plundered from wealthy southern homes. Mosby began escorting the prisoners towards Culpepper Va. where they would eventually be turned over to Confederate General Jeb Stuard.
About half-way between Haymarket Va. and New Baltimore, Mosby with the aid of Sgt. James F. Ames personally buried the treasure between two pine trees, which were them marked with an x. Before his death in 1916 Mosby told some of his friends " I have always meant to look for the cache we buried after capturing Stoughton..I guess that one of these days someone else will find it." Anyone have more on this one? And maybe my little bit of information here will help someone else, who knows.

Re: Confederate guerrilla John S. Mosby's treasure

HI;
I heard a long time ago that the plunder was buried off what is now(or was when I lived there)route 29-211. I think Mosby used it to leave fairfax court and go toward culpepper. I think bull run ( the creek) runs parallel, more or less, to the road for a while. those roads have changed names and route numbers a lot in the last 50 years, good luck, HH,Bob

Re: Confederate guerrilla John S. Mosby's treasure

Jim, Some researchers familiar with the life of John Mosby claim that this behavior was in variance with what is know about Mosby's character. But, It is a matter of historical record that when his raiders captured $160.000 worth of gold on a raid on a Baltimore and Ohio railroad train in 1864 Mosby allowed his men to divide the loot among themselfs, but refused to accept any share of the money for himself. But, later Mosby did accept a gift of a thoroughbred horse that was obvisously purchased with stolen funds.
The reason he buried the cache was never satisfactorily explained, Although Mosby did say later that he expected to return to the site within a couple of days.

Bob, I posted a reply to you, but it did'nt go tru- Thanks for the info. thats the kind of stuff I am looking for, Info. from fokes that live in the area. I plan on searching for this one come spring.
I'm researching Confederate treasures in Virginia and the Carolina's, and have a bit of info. on the Danville Confederacy Cache that I would be happy to share with anyone thats interested in it. And anyone that has info. on a Confederate Cache in any of these states and wants to share it.
This would be a good place to do it.

Re: Confederate guerrilla John S. Mosby's treasure

Clayton, I have three books which list three different areas for the cache! One claims that the gold/silver was plunder that Stoughton and his men had stolen from Confederate sympathizers. There was so much of it that it could not be carried conveniently. Mosby was also concerned that he and his men were close to being identified by the Yankees and that he and Ames buried the treasure so as not to let it be re-captured.
Interesting that Ames was captured and hanged. Mosby had been relatively nice to the prisoners captured by his men, but after that he hanged a few and placed a placard on one of the bodies saying that he would do so with ALL prisoners if the Yankees hanged any more of his men. That stopped it.
I live in the area surrounded by this tale (Culpeper/Warrenton/New Baltimore) and would be interested in looking for this with you if you would like a partner. Don't want to "butt in" on your private hunt, just not too many people MD in this area.

Road and grizzly bare,

Let me know if you would like any help either for this hunt or others. I live in Sterling and am always looking for places or people to hunt with. Being relatively new here I don't get too many opportunities to hunt around here. It is so hard to get permission from people. Good luck and let me know.

Re: Confederate guerrilla John S. Mosby's treasure

HI;
I just re-read john mosbys memoirs and letters to his wife. In the book HE states that the plunder that everyone thinks is buried was a Dr's. bag (dr.blake) and some silver spoons and stuff. He says the plunder and the bag were returned to the people of the area.the bag (of course going to the dr.) Right after that is when he captured Staunton in fairfax couthouse along with horses and yankee soldiers. There are other caches attributed to him and there are (of course) probably hundreds of thousands,at todays prices buried in the old dominion. If you google john s.mosby you can finfd the memoirs,I think in the first 2 or 3 pages. Hope this helps,Bob P/s if you get a to buried gold and silver near remington and opal virginia send a p.m. HH

Re: Confederate guerrilla John S. Mosby's treasure

Jeff,
Thanks for the heads-up on the "treasure" being gone or built over. Any thoughts on the other two well publicized caches in this area?
First : small amount of cash (12-20,000 dollars) and the printing plates from the mint hidden on 211

Second: Pirate cache hidden on Snow Hill (New Baltimore area)

Thanks for any help

Re: Confederate guerrilla John S. Mosby's treasure

SWR...Thanks for your opinion on Colonel Mosby. I just don't happen to agree with it.

Both side's " North and South " fought for what they believed in with honor.

I just wonder if Colonel Mosby were here today, if "someone" would walk up to him, and call him a traitor to the Confederacy.

What I do believe is: When all is said and done. More is said than done.

Re: Confederate guerrilla John S. Mosby's treasure

JeffD,
I don't think 100 plates are the ones I was thinking about. I have WAY too many treasure books floating around the house and can't find the one I need right now, but the plates I remember for 211 were $20's. I'll keep checking...there's got to be a way to file these a lot better than I'm doing now.
Thank goodness for "treasure Legends" on here. It's been a real timesaver.
Thanks Mark /Jeff of PA.

Grizzly

Can you tell us a little more about the counterfeit $20 plates on 211?
When were they "lost" who put em there etc.
You've got me interested in it.

Here is another counterfeit story:

In Page County Virginia, Edward Powell buried a large quantity of silver coins
in the eary eighteenth century. The site may be under a rock into which the
design of a horseshoe is carved.
Powel is belived to have been a counterfeiter. The treasure will consist of
Spanish American silver coins.

Re: Confederate guerrilla John S. Mosby's treasure

jeff,
sounds like the same cache.
Marx' book lists it as the Bureau of Engraving Treasure and places it just North of Warrenton on 211, and dates it as 1911.

Re: Confederate guerrilla John S. Mosby's treasure

Just got back today from Warrenton library and Remington. Wow - talk about loaded with Civil War history! The folks in Remington were very nice and gave me directions to some of the places I was looking for. Apparently a local thunter recently found a box of rifles that was dumped in the river when the 1863 campaign came through. I didn't get to see the rifles personally due to time restraints, but I want to go back and explore the area more. You guys who live in the area ought to talk with some of the older locals at the drug store and Groves Hardware. They have leads that will keep you hunting awhile :)

All the best,
Darren

Hey Clayton,

Not sure exactly where he found them, but several unrelated folks told me he did. I didn't get any numbers - just a "case" of rifles. I hope to go sometime, but it may be a while. Let me know if you get a chance to go out there.

Roadquest,
Glad to hear your still out there huntin', so many have been M.I.A. from this site! A great book by W.C. Jameson includes your Mosby story in great detail. I think it's the one called Treasure of the Ozarks, but more research would pay you some dividends here. Fact, I think I have it among my 800+ books at home. Check it out if you can as it is widely available and highly entertaining while being informative.
