It pays to check the hole for the little buck shots. They were mostly a confederate item I understand and pretty deadly in a non rifled barrel. I dig them here.

Bucky ball is in abundance in East TN, lol.

In N. Ga , I mostly find the 31/32 cal balls that's usually all that is left after the "ORH's" (original Relic Hunters) found most of the bigger Balls.

I still find them hard to confirm as being from the Civil War 'esp, when not in a known CW area.

I often wonder what the Caliber of Buck Shot used was in the late 1800's onward.
Sometimes I find the Smaller Balls with a Casting Spur (when Un-fired), even some of the later cast bullets & shot Have that nice white Patina .

It's getting to where when I dig a 31/32 cal ball I just can tell 'somehow , look ? feel? size?' that the ball is near CW period.
Hmmm.???
