After the fall of Richmond , April 1865, CSA President Jefferson Davis , his cabinet, and the train that contained the last of the Confederate treasury were all at Danville, Virginia.
CSA Sec of State Judah P Benjamin gave CSA Major Edward S Hutter his personal copy of Vattel's LAW OF NATIONS which was used as a Confederate code book.
Hutter's cousin, James Beverly Ward, was the copyright agent for the 1885 BEALE PAPERS , which have led to a theory that the Beale treasure story was about Hutter and VMI cadets hiding the Confederate treasury.

That $5,000 in gold could have been recovered by James P. Hawkins. He purchased the old "Ann Benedict House" on Wilson Street. It was used as the Confederate Government's Office to run all of it's departments of government. The Mexican Silver was stored there and there were two cadets that guarded that building at all times. After the war ended Mr. Waddill purchased the property and later sold it to a man for $4,000 within a week the purchaser turned in and sold the property to James P. Hawkins for $1 one whole dollar. James P. Hawkins was no kin and had nothing at all to do with the Waddill Family except they both belonged to the Odd Fellows and the Masonic Lodge together. James P. Hawkins within a few years purchased the Danville Hotel with a partner for $12,500 in 1871. So there is a very good chance that the $5,000 in gold is gone but who knows without the map we may never know where it is located. The writer did not give the man's name in Ohio so that is a dead end also. Good hunting.

James P. Hawkins was the paymaster for the Southern Express that transported all of the CSA Specie during the Civil War. Secretary of the Navy, Stephen Mallory and Secretary of the Treasury George Alfread Trenholm released the draft horses and wagons to James P. Hawkins to deliver the two wagon loads of specie out of Richmond, Va. Along the way he picked up General Picketts safe and carried it all to Danville, Va. His diary says that he delivered all of this to his Boss in Charlotte, N.C. but then while leaving Charlotte, N.C. a Major escorted him back to Charlotte, N. C. I don't know if he then retrieved the wagons of specie and hauled it back to Danville, Va or not but I suspect he did. A Mr. Bates was over the Southern Express in Charlotte, N.C. and it was at his home where President Jefferson Davis was staying when he got the news of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.

Key word in the story is... "VAULT"!

I know where a vault is in Danville that is 38 feet by 38 feet but permission will never be granted to dig. I believe all of the CSA Government Documents are in that VAULT. But the $5,000 in gold would not need a VAULT. It would only weigh about 16 pound. You could carry that in two front pockets.

Yes, I know, and what made it to Ocala/Silver Springs by way of CSA Sec Judah P Benjamin who had cousins there (their house still stands in Ocala and Yulee's wife and son stayed there after Davis's baggage was sent to Yulee's plantation in Archer , Florida))CSA Sec of War John C Breckinridge (who ran against Lincoln), and John Taylor Wood, grandson of President Taylor who was once commandant of Fort King/ Ocala during the Seminole Wars, and nephew of CSA President Jefferson Davis.
The Florida connection to the remaining CSA treasury and escape route has been neglected in the history books.
There is an half keg of Mexican silver dollars that were buried at Fort Brook (Orange Springs) during Benjamin, Breckinridge, and Wood's flight from the Union.
The other half of that keg was given to Lola Sanchez, a Confederate spy in Palatka who provided intelligence to CSA Capt J J Dickinson on Union movements on the St Johns River.
Dickinson's cavalry captured and sunk two Union gunboats at Horse Landing on the St Johns Landing.

Jeff of Pa, Nice story but I believe the story to be fabricated. A keg of gold usually contained $40,000. I have never heard of one containing $12,000. But you never know the story could have been true.

The story of the Mexican Silver Dollars in Danville, Va has been told wrong. Starting with J. Frank Carroll's book. Frank claimed that 50 kegs of silver, containing 4,000 each Mexican Silver Dollars. was donated to the CSA Government by George Alfred Trenholm, specie that he obtained in a cotton deal in Matamoras, Mexico. This was before George Alfred Trenholm became the CSA Secretary of the Treasury. All of that is correct except there were 40 kegs of silver containing 5,000 each Mexican Silver Dollars

At least one of those kegs made it to Ocala/Silver Springs , Florida with either Benjamin, Wood, or Breckinridge.
CSA Capt of the Marion county Home Guard, Edmund Davis Howse, owner of the Silver Springs riverboat landing and Marion county's first Sheriff received some of these Mexican silver dollars, as well CSA Capt J J Dickinson, and CSA spy Lola Sanchez of Palatka, all aided those three from their escape from the Union.
There were other Ocala/ Marion county citizens who received a portion of the Mexican silver dollars,
including CSA Brig Gen Robert Bullock, at whose home Breckinridge and Wood stayed before their journey up the St Johns from Fort Butler (Astor) to Fort Mellon (Sanford on Lake Monroe), overland to the intercoastal and down to Fort Dallas (Miami) and onto to Cuba where they stayed with relatives of Lola Sanchez.
Many of those silver dollars remained with Ocala families until the 1960's, and possibly some today.

Confederate Treasure

I live in Danville Va! I have found a awesome spot. It is on the side of a steep
embankment. I always doubted the story. But the was a clue on the birch tree in
Greene street cemetary. Please someone look at the symbol! It is showing the
number 3, trains, rattlesnake, end of the line of the train and many symbols. Look
at the symbol from all directions. Let me know what you think! I discovered a brick
engraved "Egypt-". I asked a man about it! He asked me if I found it in the cemetery.
I told him I found it at the CONfederate treasure. He told not to use his name! Everyone
in Danville will not tell me a thing. So is the story true?

not my area, but all treasure stories come from someone.
and usually are mixed with truths and exaggerations.
local research would most definitely be needed

The CONfederate treasure site is so large that it cannot be uncovered without being seen unless I do it at night. I am going to city council Tuesday and claim the treasure. I do not know what they will say. Some masons would like for me to get it, some don't. Some masons want me to keep it from the masons. Stay tuned and I will let the world know.
