Hey guys found this round ball at a old Park where I have found a CW hat pin.

Yes to all. They were used before, during and after the war. More before and during and not so much after but still used. If it was found in context with other known civil war artifacts then you could safely say it is civil war era.

Those are found a lot in Florida at " The Second Seminole Indian Wars " sites. 1835-1842. A Hall rifle was made in 1834 that used .69 & was used by the Army in this war. These were used in the Civil War, too.
At times, about anything that would shoot was used in that war..

Makes sense and this one doesn’t have that white patina like most. I think back then they would make ammo out of anything.

Many times they were used as " Buck & ball ." We find a lot like of small balls near the large .69 in Fl. That should kill someone.

Yes Truth 'IMO' in your area it could be either , I can see a 'Spur Cut' or a mark where one of the Buck Ball's imprinted on the main Ball. I'm thinking CW but YNK.

A question for you or anyone ; Did Brown Bess Rifles use 70 or 71 caliber balls? Circa Late 1700's Early to Mid 1800's ?

The more you read about " Brown Bess Rifles," the more you will see those referred to as .69-.75 cal.

I think you measurement is in grams, not grains. 15.432 grains per gram.

A typical 69Cal roundball measures 0.64-0.66" diameter and weighs around 23-26 grams, 355-401 grains.
The only 75Cal I have ever dug measures 0.723-0.742" diameter and weighs 36.85 grams, 569 grains.
These numbers above come from my finds log measurements.

If yours is 42.4 grams, 654 grains, that is huge for a 69Cal roundball and doesn't correlate to a 0.69" measurement. Might should double check those measurements.

I remember you posting a 69 a while back. Do you still have it for comparison sake?

The patina depends on the type of soil conditions, not the age of the round ball

Some round balls we're shot by people in those areas just out hunting. I think sometimes we make too many assumptions that every round ball or other round found was CW or Earlier. People had to hunt to eat in those days and still do today. But it is a great find not saying it isn't. Congrats

Most of the time when I ask ,” Is it Civil War?” I mean CW Period depending upon the area I’m at. If it’s a known field they camped at then yeah, but if it’s at a park I’ll mean CW period.
