I was doing some research on a bullet posted in the "What Is It" forum when I came across the following: According to the book "Ready...Aim...Fire! Small Arms Ammunition in the Battle of Gettysburg" by Dean S. Thomas the I Corps, which was the first Infantry unit to arrive on the battlefield July 1st, were issued .54, .57, .58, and .69 cal. ammunition. Four varieties of .58 cal. ammo were of such dimensions that they could be and were used in both .577 cal. Enfield rifled muskets and .58 cal. Springfield rifled muskets.
That brings up two questions, one; how do you tell if a .58 is the variety that could be used in the .577 Enfield and two; would the >58 3 ringer be plugged like the Enfield?

This is an interesting post and I would be very interested in what you find out. The bullet I posted in the “What Is It” forum was dug in an area that was heavily fought over throughout the war. After looking closer at its base, it does look like the base of an Enfield with the plug missing.
