    Sabot?

Found this today while mding. It is all lead and is covered with patina. It is @ half circle, 3/4 inch high and wide. It is @ 4 1/2 diameter. Is it possible this is part of a sabot from an artillery shell? Thanks. Also included is a twisted piece of wire, think it is part of a friction primmer?

    Re: Sabot?

I found some wire just like you show (identical even) at an old 1800s farm site yesterday. I think its just fence wire, possibly pre-barbed wire, but if not I too would be real interested to hear ideas on what the wire is.

""Also included is a twisted piece of wire, think it is part of a friction primmer?""

Question, is the twisted wire 'iron' or 'brass' ? everything I have seen where the friction primmer wire's metal has been mentioned, it describes it as a "brass" wire. I suppose that Iron might have been used, though I have no real info regarding that, but BRASS wire is often designated. If your wire IS brass and not iron, I would guess that there is a high possibility of it being part of a friction primer, they came in different sizes, so size is not entirely a determining point.
