I would set up an electrolysis tank and zap it of rust...but in the mean time soak it in distilled water until you decide the process. Doing nothing will make it worse. Don't be dissapointed if it turns out to be a cap gun....these have fooled me more than once but yours looks real to me.

Odd that it is so barnacled like that, I don't think it is really all that old. It appears to be a hammerless .38 special...not sure which model or what year, but would guess more modern.

Was that thing at the bottom of the ocean or something?

Thanks. I actually found it under about a foot of water in a creek
