As I started through my bags of pennies I picked up the other day....bag 2 struck me as odd enough that I decided to make it its own thread....

This was all part of my road trip finds....
http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,208626.0.html

As I took out the first two handfuls, I could tell there was just something different about this bag....lots of nice shiny pennies, but most of the shiny ones were copper....

Although I don't normally pull copper, I will pull AU/BU quality ones when I see them and sometimes I will find someone who dumped a roll of a particular date. Well to start out with they were mainly 1981-D and a few 1982-D that I suspect are copper based on the tone of the coins. So I started to pull the nicest of the copper memorials...

After a couple of handfuls, I started to notice a couple other copper memorial dates also mix in with nice AU/BU quality coins...1972-D, 1974-D, 1975-D, and the strangest was 1968-S....and there were a lot of them... since I normally pull all S mints I see and just set them aside anyway.. I started date searching all the shiny copper coins to pull out the nicest ones and all the 1968-S ones (also a few 1972-S AU/BU).

The odd part was I would get a handful and pull out a lot of shiny copper, but I was also pulling out wheat pennies frequently..ended up with 34 wheats from the bag which is double my normal total.

After I finally finished (slow search due to pulling the shiny coppers), I took the following picture of the shiny coppers pulled.....note that I let at least 20-30% of the shiny coppers go because they weren't unc enough....

Copper Pennies.JPG

I ended up with 293 AU/BU 1968-S pennies and probably at least 500-600 mixed date ones..

And though posted on my road trip thread....here was the rest of the bag....
34 wheat pennies (1918-D, 1937, 1941-S Small S, 1944-D(2), 1945(2), 1945-D, 1946, 1946-D(4), 1947-D, 1948-D, 1949, 1950-S, 1951, 1951-D(2), 1952-D(2), 1953, 1953-D, 1955-D, 1956, 1956-D(2), 1957-D(3), 1958-D(3))

13 Canadian (1959, 1960, 1968, 1973(2), 1974, 1980, 1984, 1992, 1993, 1994, 2003-P Uncrowned, 2005)

That is some imprssive finds for the AU/ BU grade coins. I too save high AU/BU coins for my roll set. I am about 70% done with no mint mark (P's) 1980 to 2008.

I have never found that many at one time though. That is some awesome grabs especially the 1968s's.

To the conitnued debate "can you find BU coins in circulation" I say yes.

Happy Hunting,
Jason

Well, by pure definition....No. A coin cannot be both "in circulation" and "uncirculated".

That being said, in my opinion you can find a coin that would pass as BU in circulation.

Just finished another bag of pennies from the same bank.....

Took out the first handful and.....uh oh.....99.9% 1982-D and shiny (but clearly AU at best and not BU like the previous bag).

Although I did find an occasional othe date mixed in.... the whole bag was probably 98-99% mostly AU 1982-D pennies....my first skunk bag of pennies....at least it didn't take long to search.... :P

But now I am thinking....could there be a bag of wheaties???? hoping so...

I am going to guess they were mixed....odd bags of pennies and I just started a new thread about the nickel bags I picked up at the same bank.... :)

I am guessing someone passed away and the relatives cashed in whatever was there....and there was a bag of 1982-D pennies that hadn't been sorted yet...
