Are you trying to get hate mail with this post or what? A lot of people on this forum are against marking coin. Just heads up...seems like way too much work with nothing in return.

Re: Marking Coins (I did 6,000 today!)

I think it's awesome.

If you're afraid of the others, I understand, but if you could, would you post
a scan of one so I know what your handwriting looks like.

I've been marking dates for several years now. It's a good way to see where your coins
are going after you dump them. The mark is really only good for about a week as any longer
than that and you don't know if it's been rolled, searched, dumped, and re-rolled, or just rolled.

I was amazed to find out just how much Brinks, CWI, and Davis drop coins off at each other's
locations. The quickest I've seen is a dump at a Brinks bank that picked up on a Monday, adn
I got my marks back in a CWI box on a Wednesday. One can only assume that Brinks dumped
those bags off directly at the CWI location on Monday, CWI rolled them on Tuesday (Date stamped
on the box), and Guarda delivered them Wednesday Morning. Kind of rained on my whole "dump on
one, buy from the other" strategy.

Plus it's illegal. The SS will hunt you down ;D

I actually had a teller tell me that once. She couldn't understand why I laughed at her.

The really interesting part is that while it's not illegal for coins, it's illegal to intentionally
render paper money unfit for reissue. Key word is intentionally as it's impossible to circulate
a paper bill without eventually wearing it out.

okay...so how did this knowledge help you find more silver?
what do you do ....work for Sharpie?....how would you know they only last a week?
the last time i looked they were a PERMANENT marker. also even if they "wore off" there would be permanent damage to the coin....these markers contain propanol, butanol, and diacetone alcohols.....they can't be good for coins since they will affect the surface of the coin rendering it worthless...i know they're only common coins, but even the common ones are needed for hole fillers.
i just can't understand why anyone would ruin a coin that someone else may want just to "see where my coins went". sorry but that sounds very selfish to me , ruining coins for a small bit of knowledge for the sake of self profit.
okay,i'll get off the soapbox now.
i personally find that hard to believe especially with coins that aren't heavily circulated

Why not spray paint some grafitti on some buildings downtown just as an experiment to see how long it takes it to get X'd-out or painted-over? Or throw some trash out along the freeway to see how long it takes to get it cleaned up? It would be interesting.

Re: Marking Coins (I did 6,000 today!)

If you do this right, you can glean some information from it. However, marking 6,000 coins is going way overboard, not to mention the time it took to do it. This time of the year, that's detecting time you are losing. I mark one coin per roll with the date and track where I dump them and when I see them again. It's interesting that I've just started getting the ones I marked in 2007 back for the first time (although I've received 2008 marked coins in the interim). I always pick one of the most beat-up coins in the roll to mark. Those that are dinged up bad (casino halves), discolored, or just worn. If there are none like that, then I pick a bicentennial (there's enough of those to go around). If you don't keep track of where you dump them and when you see them again, then you aren't getting any information out of it and you're just wasting time and effort. One coin per roll is enough to track where they are going.

Re: Marking Coins (I did 6,000 today!)

I don't understand what information you gain from it, you mean eventually I will get my own dumps back in machine rolled? :icon_scratch: NEWSFLASH duh. I thought that was a given. I just disagree with the whole practice and think it is not only selfish but also a waste of time and ruining others potential CRH collection by marking them. I've also collected silver coins that were snug up against marked coins so imho it doesn't really even matter if you get your own dumps back because there is potential for other peoples silver dumps to get mixed in.

I just got a new drill press a few weeks ago, I think Im gonna start drilling all of my dumps. So keep aneye out cause hear they come!!!!!!
Or I also have a punch set, I could punch the month & year on every single dump coin so that way I will know if I get it again and I don't have to worry about the marker rubbing off!!! :tongue3: Just so you know Im kidding guys!!! ;D

It's a very sensitive issue!

Let's put it like this...
You have been searching for a specific coin for 10 years, maybe even longer, then you finally find it. Only to have it selfishly and pemanantly ruined by somebody marking it for frivolous research. How would you feel?

By the way. I only search for silver and do not try and fill folders or books. I do however think about others from time to time.

happy hunting to all... just not in my area ;D

U.S.code Title 18, Chapter 17, Section 331:
Whoever fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates, impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the mints of the United States, or any foreign coins which are by law made current or are in actual use or circulation as money within the United States; or
Whoever fraudulently possesses, passes, utters, publishes, or sells, or attempts to pass, utter, publish, or sell, or brings into the United States, any such coin, knowing the same to be altered, defaced, mutilated, impaired, diminished, falsified, scaled, or lightened—
Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

I guess it depends on whether you consider marking them to fit in one of these categories or not.

Crap, there goes my plan of writing "$1" on the halves and passing them off as dollar coins. I guess I'll just have to stick to NON fraudulent purposes when marking the halves.

Actually, that sounds pretty selfish to me. You are needlessly subjected all those clad half dollars to bag marks, coin counter damage, Machine rolling damage, etc.... All for the sake of a couple silver coins for personal profit!!!

Well it appears you don't know me very well! I reroll every coin I check. Yes I do take what I want and return what I don't want and allow others to search for waht they want with out damaging[size=9pt]the other coins.

I say good day to you sir! Good Day!

Take your sharpie and play in somebody elses sandbox

I have seen allot of red marker slashes across the " we trust " on 1974 Ds. I just presumed they were looking for DD and were to lazy to use some reading glasses.
