I know markiing coins really irritates some people, but I just had to know...

About two weeks ago, I ordered $1000 in half dollars. I've been doing this off and on for a while. I was really curious to know if I was getting my own coins back, even though I am picking up at a bank and dumping at a credit union. On vacation for a week. I went to the bank yesterday and they had a $1000 bag in the vault.

Yep, sure enough, I got back quite a few of the marked coins. So now I figure I will go out a little further for the order.

This is what I got in the bag yesterday:

1 - 1946
1 -1964
1 - 1968
1- quarter
1 - 1974 100 lira coin
1 button
1 paperclip

Not going to mark anymore.

You got some of your own marked coins back, and *gasp* silver was mixed in. :tard:

We need a thumbs down icon!

What honestly did you learn... Sure you got your dumps back... But you got silver! I would not car if out of $1,000 $500 where my dumps all long as there was silver also.

So did you REALLY learn anything, and if you did is it going to stop you from buying coins in the future.

You said you will have to go out longer for your orders. Do you think you wont get any of your dumps back? They will just keep cycling thru the routine unless someone pulls them from circulation, but with your marks on them that is very unlikely.

I just dont see the point, if there is silver being found that is all you need to know.

(With a big sigh and while shaking my head) New rule! If you are going to waste your time marking coins, please don't waste ours by telling us!

For me i see nothing wrong with making one mark on a worn out 72 per 500$ dollars. Hurts nothing at all.

OMG....not again
so you found out that your getting your own dumps back....how come this never came as a surprise to those of us who don't mark our dumps? i'm glad to hear your not going to mark again but now there is another 2000 marked coins that will never leave circulation.....add that to all the other markers dumps and soon all we are going to find is rolls full of marked coins.....they all add up and they don't go away

never marked a coin in my time but if you find one thats marked with sharpie and you want it clean for your collection just take the same color sharpie write over the mark then immediately wipe it off with your fingertip . If theres still some marker left over repeat the process.

I didn't realize it was such a sensitive topic...and didn't mean to open up a can of worms... :o my curiousity stemmed from the fact after getting so many skunk boxes, was if I was just on the proverbial "rat-wheel", getting boxes, dumping them, and then getting the same coins back....so I marked several loads, but I did it in a non discreet way, I think when some hear the words "marked coin" they think of a big red check mark on the face or reverse, I edge-marked mine, and it's hardly noticible, and my suspicion came true, I got back a lot of my coins, so you have to think in ordering boxes, that you've searched the same coins multiple times, dispite the fact I dump in a different bank...I'm thinking now it may be more of an advantage to go completely out of your area to buy boxes...

I don't think it is a big deal to mark 2000 coins. From 1971 to 2000, the mint produced 2,734,167,929 pieces of JFK halves and inbetween 4-5 millions every year after. Assuming some went to casino, there are a lot out there or in the Fed's vaults. If you dig deep enough, you can still get boxes of brand new 199X coins. Some CRHers were frustrated about getting boxes of brand new coins.

Since many CRHers are also collectors so this can be done as considerate of their feelings. I am one of this group. But if someone just marks the beat-up coins, casino coins, the 1971d, 1976p, and 1976d for the purpose of tracking, I really have no problem with it. I just hope future markers use as less as possible (1000?)and write a more definitive mark instead of just a dot or cross.

There are a lot of AU or BU JFK coins out there and those really should not be marked for any purpose. Doing that would be insensitive. For those who want to mark something just for fun, they should check out this website:

Allright now that you found out your getting your dumps back. you need to understand that it would not be any advantage to buy coins from futher away.

But it would be an advantage to dump futher away. I mean Far Far away. Like another district.

Meaning your going to need to know how far your Carrier / Coin distributer operates. and then dump outside of their territory.

Let me tell you how it works around my hunting ground.

I am in Southeastern Michigan. We have 2 major Distributors (Brinks and Loomis) mostly. Both have facility's' in Downtown Detroit.

Brinks mostley redistributes coin as well as Loomis but Loomis has a contract with the Fed. which also is located in the same neighborhood.

So if I want older coins I go to banks with Brinks boxes. If I am looking for new pennies Quarters and Dollars, I need to find a bank that works with Loomis.

Both of theses carriers have a distribution network that stretches out 50 miles in any direction from Detroit.

The next distribution center for both of these guys is Lansing Mi. For me that's a 2 hour drive. If I did not want to see my dumps I would need to go there. To Dump.

However Loomis also has a distribution center in Flint Mi. that's only a little over an hour for me as I am already 20 miles north of the Detroit Distribution center. But my dump banks don't operate in Flint. nor do they have a contract with Loomis.

So if I want to eliminate seeing my dumps I would need to go as far as Lansing to dump. If I had the time or money to hold my dumps and do them in one day, as I work and only work with enough cash to buy up to 4 boxes a day. it makes that option virtually impossible.

So yes we all search our own dumps over and over and over again. No avoiding it.

Unless of course you know you are close to the middle or the dividing line between districts. You'll need to do some research.

There is hope though. Because every time you dump your coins someone else is dumping a coin collection at another bank and they all get mixed together at the distributor, re wrapped and boxed and shipped back to you. And right in the same Box you might find a roll with a coin you marked and a Walking Liberty right next to it. It's a cyclicale thing.

And that is how it works.

Hope that helps. Good Luck.

Buy the way I am amazed at how fast some of the marked coins I've seen come around over and over again............. How do I know you ask? :dontknow: Well they have dates written on them.

I am new to this game and have had more luck with Roosevelt dimes (at least one per box) than halves....any suggestions? Also I ran across a horrible box the other day.....

EVERY SINGLE half in the box was marked with a black mark on top of Kennedy's head. EVERY SINGLE COIN in the BOX!!!! EVERY roll, EVERY COIN marked the same way. Has anyone ever ran into this before? It was a Loomis box and they were machine rolled.

lol i really think im going to mark up my next like 6 boxes just so it will ruin the day of everyone that actually cares that much.
i mean this is unreal. Granted i get what some of you are saying if its a real nice 1970's or 80's why mark it, but geez. most of the halves i see are already beat.
Imagine if someone did the unthinkable and marked the halves by drilling a hole in them, lol im pretty sure someones life would end.

Just curious guys, I have one of these at home.

Would I need to buy the cobalt bit, or do you think a carbide bit would be sufficient to do the following.

Stack the halves in a tube (to hold them vertical), then drill a small 1/8" hole through the entire stack.

Any good hardened steel bit is sufficient but you have to hold them down
somehow or they just spin in the tube. I find if you get in a good rythm going
you can drill about 6 a minute doing them one at a time with a foot powered
quick release vise ;D ;D ;D

The absolute easiest way to mark them permanently is to have an angle iron set
groove up, fill it with coins in a laid down stack fashion and run a 4 inch grinder
down the whole length, you can mark 1000 coins in like 10 seconds :o
