Searching the rolls...

Today I got 60 penny rolls from the bank, along with weird looks from the teller. I came out with 10 wheat pennies and 12 Canadian pennies! The wheat penny dates are:
1957 D
1957 D
1957 D
1953
1952 D
1945
1945 D
1944
1941
1940 - this one's pretty much totally green
The Canadian penny dates range from 1999 to 1954...

(I had to reduce the picture to this size just to make it small enough to upload..... )

I wish I had the patience to search through pennies... I'll stick to my dimes and nickels for now, haha.

A couple other interesting things of note (interesting to me, not necessarily you )... One roll had on the outside "Lucky 83's -- All 50 1983's" and they indeed were... A couple of the pennies looked as though someone took a grinder to them. ...told you you wouldn't find it interesting...

Don't forget about checking half dollars too. It can be a little tough to find a bank that has a lot of them in rolls, but if you can, check for the occasional 1964 silver half, and especially the 1965, 66, 67, 68, 69 and 70 silver clad halves (40% silver).

Here's a neat little fact you probably didn't know about pennies.... They shatter like glass when they are -320 degrees F. You can take them and simply tap them and they fall to pieces. nickles dimes and quarters wont though.

Wasnt that 1982 mud? small/large date and copper/zinc? I have noticed that alot of 1983 pennies have a strange golden color though...

Yep, those are the ones that had like 10 varieties for that year, a pain to try and tell them apart, specially composition wise

Did you know that some of the 83s are doubled die. It's on the reverse in the lettering at the top.. HH Art... Could that be the lucky roll

Well, the '83 roll went right back with the rest of the rejects...so I guess we'll never know....

A good way to tell the copper 82s from the zinc ones is the ruler test.

Place a pencil on a flat surface and put a ruler across it right at the halfway mark (like a seesaw). Put any penny from 1983 onwards at the down end. Placing another 1983-date penny at the other end will not cause it to move, but put any pre-1982 penny on the end and it will be heavier. That's how you can tell which 82s are the old copper composition.

Thanks for the info Immy, its very helpfull, i will have to try that. I have alot of proofs and unc. that i dont know is they are zinc or copper.
