they are hard to find for that reason. none were made for circulation in 1970. but the mint made up for it in 1971. i think the mint made at least 10,000 halves for every member of the population. i find tons of 71's all the time.

Thanks again Argentium.

1971P,D & S production combined (457,261,424) to be exact
1970D = (2,150,000) issued only in mint sets. according to "The Official Red Book"

If we look up the census numbers for 1970 you should find the the us population was around 250 million so nearly (2) 71's for every man woman and child in the USA but less than 1 70D for every 116 citizens. or .008 coins per US citizen. :o

Yeah that's a hard coin to find right there. I've tapped the 1800's four times already and still havn't seen one of those.

thanks mojo for doing the research that i was too lazy to do. i sure would have thought that the ratio would be higher than that going by how many of those *&%% 71's that i find every week. the thing i hate so much about them is for some reason i have trouble telling the difference between silver and a 71 much of the time when i edge search. the 71's sometime look like a dirty keeper, (at least to me anyway).
