Finished My Nickel Album

Last night I finally finished my nickel album. I searched 1,540 nickels and in them was two War Times, one being the 1943D. It's taken me just over 2½ years and 608,850 nickels and I've finally completed my Dansco Jefferson nickel album (1938-); 161 varieties, $8.05 face (still haven't found the 2009D, but I'm not worried about that). It's tough to say how rare this one nickel is, but for me it was as rare as the other key date Jeffersons (those of 2-3 million mintages).

It feels super to have completed this album. Right now I'm not sure what I'll do. Many people have asked me, "when are you going to stop searching?" and I frequently say when I've finished finding them all (meaning the more modern albums are filled, Roosevelts, not Mercury, etc.). Part of me would rather not see another roll of nickels ever again, but another part still longs to find a 19th century nickel, a shield nickel, more proofs, more errors or more strange foreign coins. I'll have to give it some thought. I'll definitely be searching enough nickels to get the recent coins, 2009, 2010, etc., but on other hand I don't plan on buying a box of nickels again. We'll see ... What do you guys think? I'm not really a complete roll kind of hunter.

BTW my Roosevelt album and Franklin albums both need 3 varieties.

Some figures from the 608,850 nickels (I compiled this for my own sake, but in case anyone wants to know, here's one New Englander's experience searching nickels May 2007-Dec 2009)

Liberties - 6 (1904, 2 x 1907, 3 x 1912)
Buffaloes - 80 (the nice ones being 1920, 1930, 1934, 1935, 1935D, 1936, 1937, most are dateless or 1934+)
War Times - 250

(of the last two years, 147 War Times)

1942P - 9
1942S - 3
1943P - 51
1943D - 1
1943S - 15
1944P - 28
1944D - 5
1944S - 2
1945P - 19
1945D - 4
1945S - 9

Proofs - 9 (70S, 73S, 74S, 75S, 80S, 82S, 83S, 90S, 01S)
Errors - I've found a few cuds, a bunch of clips, including two double clipped nickels (one being a War Time) and some slight offset strikes (nothing incredible)

Keys (under 10 million minted, my figures for these are minimums, I didn't initially keep track too well and I now only flip nickels with a mint mark, so I know I've missed some 1950's and 1955's)

1938D - 1 (a month ago)
1938S - 3
1939D - 4
1939S - 5
1949S - 14
1950 - 3
1950D - 3
1951S - 8
1955 - 9

Very nice. And nice statistics too. I keep stats of all my foriegn and other coins, just like you do. It just enhances the hobby and akes it more fun. takes more time, but hte fun factor makes it worth "wasting" that time.

Good job!

Good job!
I am trying to fill up my Dansco as well. I have five spots left (as of yesterday, when I found my first '51S). They are: 38D,39D,39S,43D and 50D. So far I have been through 166,080 nickels. I have found 55 war nickels.

Mine is down to the 1939D, and I have found at least 3 of every other variety. I have as well asked myself if I will do any more nickel boxes when I find the 39D (but I have been searching for about 12 years...with the last 3 being pretty high numbers). I will probably move on to strictly dimes to try to complete the Roosevelt set, and halves too. Congrats to you sir.

I am working on three albums, but the first one still needs

39D, 39S, 44D, 55, and the 2009D

I don't know why 1955 is hard for me. But I've gotten none so far.

Coingrats again. Hopefully numerous of us will soon have a filled album (or two ... or three)

:-)

WTG, Brian! How sweet was it to fill that last hole? Sounds like it was a belated birthday gift from the coin gods.

That's awesome!! I've still got to find several of the tougher ones, but I'll get there eventually. If I keep working the way I have been, it may be 2 1/2 decades, but I'll get there. Once again, congratualations!! :hello2:

Kindest regards,
Kantuck

ps If mine was completed, my next goal would be to fill a buffalo album, but then again, I love nickels.

Congratulations. That is a great accomplishment. Mine is Lincoln Cents. In 3 years I've found everything except the 1909 S VDB, 1914D, 1922 Plain, 1931D; 1931S and the double dies. I did find one of the lesser varieties of 1972 DDO

From my stats I have calculated that the adjusted mintage for the '43D (taking into consideration how many war nickels have been removed from circulation) is in the range of 657,642 to 2,722,332. Of course, this relies only on my meager 215k nickels. This does not mean that there are that many still in circulation, but that currently it appears as though that is how many were minted.

I think your numbers are high. Based on strictly my 2009 stats, I put the 1943-D at roughly 315,438 in circulation assuming that all war nickels were removed at the same rate. i.e. There is the same % left of each of them. This is probably an inaccurate assumption as set collectors are likely to remove one of each which will put a slightly heavier load on the lower mintages.

For 2008... 333,149 left in circulation.

If I used my 2007 stats instead, the estimate is at 583,468 left in circulation.

My 2009 and 2008 numbers correlate well together and if I take my dream box of war nickels out of my 2007 finds (100 war nickels in less than one box), then my 2007 estimates are right in between the two at 328,678 left in circulation.

So for my three years of keeping stats, I would say there are between 300,000 and 350,000 1943-D War Nickels left in circulation.

I can run through how I came up with my numbers if anyone is curious, but I know I had posted that information a couple years ago as well, so it may be available via searching old posts as well.

Would you mind linking me to that post...I couldn't find it.
BTW, if I'm not mistaken, what you mean by the number left in circulation, is actually the adjusted mintage taking into account the higher rates of war nickel removal from circulation. So, for example, instead of 583,468 left in circulation, it would mean that it appears as though 583,468 coins were minted.

Thanks,
Aaron

My numbers are how many I believe are actually still able to be found by CRHing. (i.e. What is left in circulation.)

Perhaps I misread your intent. If you were attempting to approximate how many still exist (in circulation, in collections, put away years ago by hoarders, etc.), then maybe your numbers make more sense and they should be higher than mine. However, if that is what you were attempting, then I would actually guess your number might be a bit low... Unfortunately, I have no data to back up that theory. I can only estimate what is left in circulation based on my data.

And yes, my numbers are adjusted specifically for War nickels.

Based on my data:
My estimate for pre-1960 nickels left in circulation = ~18.34%
My esitmate for war nickels left in circulation = ~2.15%
