? ? ? ? ? ?Mainly because there is No way to Count what is left.

Back in the 70's when silver rose to over $50.00 an Ounce everyone turned in their silver coins
for melt, even alot of semi-keys, because they were worth more to melt them down.

the fact that most turned in were only common date coins, should mean that, some of those
dates are now down to only a few thousand left in collectors hands.

However, how do you prove this ?

super rare dates are kept track of, because they are sent in for grading, and or sold at
highly publicized auctions, so the approximate number are known.

nobody in their right mind, unless they want a complete collection of professionally graded roosies,
is going to send a MS-65? condition 1962 silver dime (VALUE $1.25) in to be graded and encapsulated, because it is cost prohibitive and crazy to do so.

? SO for all we know, there are only 150 MS-65 1962 dimes in existence
? so for all we know,THEY? ARE? RARE.
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?But they are STILL only worth $1.25
?And try to sell one for $1.25 ,? not professionally graded, to? a dealer?

As far as the destroying half of them goes, think about the financial aspect. It would cost you much more to get the half of the mintage and destroy them than you could ever recover from any remaining coins.

My thought was if there were 15 or 20 known to exist and you accidentally grinded or ground half of them to hell and had the remnants,

Any coin with a mintage of 15 or 20 means each one would cost five or six figures each. Plus the majority would already be in private collections. Even if you had the income and the coins were available the value wouldn't automatically go up if there wasn't collector demand. Scarcity alone doesn't determine a coin's value. Besides, if you made a public spectacle of your willful destruction of collectible coins you'd become a pariah in the numimatic community.
