being new can anyone fill me in on why i should or shouldn't trade 40's for full morgans or peace dollars. Local shop has them at 19.25 per. They're talking about 2.50 per on the 40's.

The silver value on one 40% half is $3.48

The silver value on one silver dollar is $18.22

so logically you could trade 5.25 halves for one dollar.

the dealer wants 7.75 ($26.97 silver value) for one dollar.

the dealer does need to make some profit but not 48%

if you have a lot of 40s send them to a refiner like ARA, they will take a 10% profit and mail you a check.

I would hold 40% if they are only going to pay 5x. If I am going to pay a 1.20 premium I would prefer .999 rounds instead of Peace or Morgan dollars so keep that in mind.

My dealer is still only paying $1 ea. for 40%, (I've never sold any to him).
He also wants $22 ea. for common silver dollars.
I wouldn't have a problem trading up at your dealer's prices.

Trade for a little of everything. Especially trade for things you enjoy collecting. I kinda like designer SAEs myself.

found a few dealers that'll pay 3.00 per 40% and are at 19 per full dollar.

40% base metal vs 90. Also the 40's only cost me face. What about 90% half vs silver dollar? What's better?

It really depends on cost. If the dealer will sell be any 90% coin at (x) face. I would pick the dollar but most dealers have a premium on silver dollars. As far as trading 40% coins now it depends on how many you have and how big the trade is. If you are going to trade 10 rolls my answer would be different than if you are trading 100 rolls. To bad Dijibouti is so far or else we could work a trade.

Based on your latest number of $19 per silver dollar your premium is down to $.63 an ounce.

Would it be better to hold junk morgans or peace? Can you guys give me pro's or con's? It takes alot of 40's or alot of the stack to move into a small stack.

thx!

Nothing wrong with trading 40's for 90's,Silver Dollars or Eagles. I'm going to swap some 40's this week.

When selling or trading your 40%ers, don't forget that the coins have copper value supplemental to the silver value........60% of the weight! It takes approximately 7 40% halves to make an ounce of silver, but those same 7 coins also provide 1.5 ounces of copper that have value worthy of consideration.

Re: trading 1/2s for Halves...

I unloaded five extra 40% rolls at a coin show last week. With the proceeds, I was able to get 7 WLH's, 5 Franklins. 10 '64 Kennedy's, 2 Morgans, 1 Peace Dollar (and 1 soft pretzel).

I was very pleased.....exchanging good found money for even better found money!

Re: trading 1/2s for Halves...

I try to trade all of my 40%'ers for Gold. I am not particular about the increment either.
So far by trading in 40%'ers I have acquired three Sovereigns, $5 liberty and a 1/10 oz Gold Eagle. Granted, I had to pay
about $100 dollars out of pocket plus the 40%'ers but I believe I came out on top. :laughing7:

Well said Grizz; though the copper doesn't add very much to the total value:
