Question on "enders" please advise.

I have a dumb question.... When one is looking for halve dollar enders in rolls how do you know if you have an "ender" when the "back" eagle portion of the coin is showing? This would apply to the kennedy halfs.

if it's a kennedy that is silver you can tell pretty much by the color of the coin, it looks different

I personally can't tell the difference. I had a 40% ender once and didn't even know it until I opened the roll and flipped the first coin over to see "1967."

My problem is almost all the silvers I've found in all my boxes had a tarnished or dirty look to them, I've had lots of "enders" that looked the same, then when I flipped the coin over it would be a 74 or 72 or something clad....

Guess I dont have the "eye"

One thing I always do, if a rim looks dirty, check it. If a coin looks dirty, check it. I've pulled out a lot of silver that looked like dirty nasty coins. I see a lot of black rims that wind up being silver.

FIRE,
Two points: (1) the first is the color and tarnish tones, after a while you can mostly pick them out; (2) look for the "D" mint-mark on the back next to the left eagle talon. If you see that "D" you have a no kidding Denver mint true 1964 90% silver Half.
I got one that way and felt like celebrating! I don't see many D-mint '64s, so spotting an ender that way is a charge!

As others have said, you recognize it after awhile...however, seeing as that is of no help to you... I would describe the typical look of a reverse 40% Kennedy as a slightly "whiter", yet tarnished patina as opposed to the shiny nickel clad halves surrounding it, and the 90% Kennedy's even more so...after you've seen a few you truly will recognize it...I still get fooled after 4 years , but not very often...I'd take $20 bets to pick one out of a lineup all day long.

Silver coins to me appear white, where as clad coins look silver. Also alot of silver coins start to get a little yellow tint to them too. I hope this doesn't confuse you.

I was simply stating if a coin looks odd in any way or discolored, rim or not, to look at the date. Is that ok with you?? And what did you have to add to this thread that would help his question??
Geeze, sooooo many people on this forum love to try and make people feel like idiots.


Captain noodle and Dave are right, they will usually appear whiter, and if you see any black or tarnish look check it out.

I cant tell by the back, I have a great eye for the edges though...
