Immy, I have a few searched boxes of half dollars laying around. If I took them to casino with 50 cent slots, would they count them and give me bills for them? Would they be happy or mad about it? The other question is, If I cashed in three boxes of half dollars, would they try to make me sign a tax form (thinking I won them)?

Ringding, I know you posted your questions for Immy but I thought I would share something I recently saw at a casino I visited last month. I saw a woman win very large amounts of money on a slot machine and yes they did have her sign a form each time she won. I'm sure it was for tax purposes. However, if you brought in the halves to the cashier booth at the casino in casino plastic cups and just cashed them in I seriously doubt they would have you fill out any tax forms. I think that's only done when the slot machine has a large payout that is activated. Then the employees come over and take down all of the important information. If you have a casino near you that accepts halves or has machines that pay out in halves;I would certainly cash them in. I would not bring them in the boxes; I would open the rolls and put them all into several casino cups and then cash them in. The employees have to be able to dump the coins into the counter, and I don't think they want to open or maybe are not allowed to open those rolls. Everything they do is filmed on the security cameras.

Should I go to the casino, get some of the plastic cups, take them out to my car, fill them up with halves, and bring them back in? It might take a few trips, but it sounds like it would work. Will they allow me to take the cups out of the casino?

This could have changed since its been a while since I was near a casino. It was 2000 when I left Germany on our post. At the time if you won more than $1200 you would have had to report it to taxes. It all depends on what each state and Federal statues combine as to what the amount is. On our post the largest payout from a machine was $1199 so that they did not have to fill out the tax forms.

As I said its probably a different number where you are. I was never asked to fill out anything ever when I brought individual cups with coin in it. I don't think I ever had more than $1000 in a coffee cup though.

I don't think they will have a problem with you taking any of those plastic cups. I'm sure people take them as souvenirs, and if security asks why you are taking some plastic cups out of the casino you can tell them that you have loose change you need to bring in to gamble with. I don't think they will even ask you anything. I only have one thing to say that I don't know where you will be parked at the casino or how large the parking lot is. How much security they have also, so please be carefull if you are carrying a cup with $300-$400 in halves at a time. You never know what people will try!!! Just be cautious or have someone with you for added security.

The answer is a definite...probably. Are you talking about Vegas specifically? Even the big hotels on the Vegas Strip still have jet sorters in the casino cages so I don't think it'll be a problem. Might be better to find a casino that already has half dollar slots (and they're disappearing fast!). They might give you a funny look if you came in with $1500 in halves all at once. Try breaking it up into smaller amounts and bringing them in that way. When I used to bring by my opened boxes back I'd do it separate trips. Casino cups hold about $200 in halves and they don't care if the cups leave the property.

I happened to find a hotel downtown today that has a self-serve coin sorter which allows anonymous returns. You can cash in up to $1000 before anyone has to put on a new empty bag.

That would be the Fremont Hotel & Casino. They even have a few 50¢ machines for searching.
