Don't forget to look for coins in, around, and under the coin counting machines. I've found silver doing this!

Re: BEGINNERS GUIDE TO COIN ROLL HUNTING!!! + TERMS

Are the coin counting machines privately owned else where? We got "Coin Star" machines in the supermarket, they keep 10%.I've considered buying one. Some banks ask 7% for handling coinage, they get 0% of my business.
Truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it and ignorance may deride it, but, in the end, there it is.

You can always buy your own....

OR Better yet, sign up a checking account with a bank that does have one, they will let u use it 4 free.

Re: BEGINNERS GUIDE TO COIN ROLL HUNTING!!! + TERMS

ok ok ok....I know bumps are really lame, so I might as well give some advice while I'm on this thread. I've been coin hunting for a while now, so I thought I'd pass on some basic advice for the novice coin roll hunter:

    1. Learn key dates, mintmarks, and errors. Learn proofs and metallic composition. If you're going to be sorting through this much change, you might as well maximize your gains. Having a system helps, like setting aside potential rarities, and then later going back to check them in detail. I wish wish wish I had paid better attention when I first started. Who knows what coins I missed?

    2. If profit is one of your goals, watch your gas! Seriously!

    3. Use good lighting and consider a getting a loupe.

    4. Don't let the terminology baffle you. It's not as difficult as it sounds.

    5. Hunt what you like. If you like wheats, hunt wheats. If you like silver, hunt silver. Just enjoy yourself.

Re: BEGINNERS GUIDE TO COIN ROLL HUNTING!!! + TERMS

Went by the main branch of my bank today, had a $1000 check to cash so I didn't just walk in off the street looking for halves. They were very nice, unlike my usual branch, unfortunately there wasn't a half dollar on the premisis but they were more than happy to order me a box- will be in Tuesday (I will have extra cash on hand in case they have more). Thanks for this thread, need to know what to keep. On the '76 halves some say some are silver and some not- how do you tell? By weighing them? O and BUMP for the next newbie. HH Mark
Life is a coin, you can spend it any way you wish, but you can only spend it once.
