Okay. I just found Treasure Net and even more recently discovered this particular forum. I have never collected coins even though my dad gave me a huge collection. I know, that doesn't make sense. Let me explain. Seven or eight years ago, my dad retired and my mother and he retired and moved to the beach. He asked me to keep his coin collection. He didn't really know what he had. He had everything in old cigar boxes. I tried to sort things and quickly was overwhelmed and lost interest. The collection is spread all over the house. Reading this has got me motivated to start working on it again. I could never sell any of it because it is really my dads and he might want it back. Fast forward to this. This roll hunting sounds like my idea of fun. I am just not sure I understand everything. Forgive my ignorance. I go to different banks around town and try to purchase all the .50 rolls they have. Take them home, pull out all 1964s and earlier. These are 90% silver. Also pull out all 1965-? and these are 40%. Reroll all the normal ones and return them to the bank. Banks don't get mad? How often do you hit the same location? Where is the best place to sell? Any hints you can give a newby would be apreciated. I am ready to head out right now and find me some rolls.

1965-70 are 40% i reroll and return my halves to one bank and get them from others... mark rolls you have checked with a big line or your member name here to see if anyone gets yours. hold on to them until copper has a large gain again the teke them to a coin dealer or sell them on ebay for a better profit since coin dealers will deduct anywhere from 10-40% so that they still make a profit.

tnfishdaddy, in order to coin roll hunt at banks you need a permit from the U.S. Mint.

You will need at least 3 references from current coin roll hunters and your permit is only good in your county.

(this is a joke ;D ;D ;D)

Then you have to mail a check for $500 to my personal address, in order to obtain final permission to hunt for them.

:D

Just kidding.

However, if you want answers to all your questions and more, just read the last month or two of posts in this forum, and all will be revealed.

Welcome to TN by the way.
:)

Tell you what guys. The first 100 that I find, I will send to you guys for all your help. ;) ;) ;D ;D ;D Actually, I just got back from my credit union and they didn't have a thing. I am off work today, school holiday. Problem is it is raining and I have the boys today (3 and 4 years old). Just not a good day to be dragging them in and out of all the banks. Guess I will have to wait until the wife gets home. Anybody explain how to figure prices for 90% and 40%? I would like to figure out how many I would make per 10, 25, 50, etc.

TN: Welcome to the Net! To answer your question, As I speak, Silver is going for exactly $12 an ounce. Each 90% Half has .36169 of an Ounce. Multiply .36169 X $12.00 = $4.34 That's what each 90% Half is worth! Now, the 40% Halves. Each 40% Half has .14792 of an ounce of silver. Multiply .14792 X $12.00 = $1.78 OK? Now when you go to sell them, a Dealer will only offer about 70% of that figure! I'm not real sure, but eBay may be the way to go. I trust that this helps a little!

Thanks buscadero. Much help. I just got back from the bank with over $700 worth. Teller thought I was nuts. In fact she was thanking me for taking them. She said that they had been sitting there for over a year. I didn't have the heart to tell her I would be bringing them back after I checked them out. Wish me luck.

I would suggest not returning them to the same bank. You can of course, but they will get
annoyed fast... and if this is a bank you may want to order from in the future, or possibly let
you know when they get in some half dollars.. then you want to keep them happy. Dont burn
your bridges. Next time you ask, they might just say... nope we dont have any.

Its sort of an unwritten rule of Coin Searching etiquette LOL. Now if you could care less and this
bank is just a one time thing that you came across... then go for it :) Basically if they peg you as
a searcher, they wont be so nice anymore.

Just my little tip o' the day :) Have fun.

tnfishdaddy, we take the nonsilver halves to the casino and exchange for bills. Also, I spend a lot of them at convenience stores and stuff. I try to keep the numbers of coins that I deposit at the bank to a minimum.

I have the solution to the "Kids are home" situation. I buy a box of pennies for my kids to go through, keeps them busy for hours, while I do my own searching. Might want to take a quick look through them when they are done, my kids only want the shiny new ones.

AMEN not only will the bank get annoyed, but they will probably slap some silly 10% charge on bringing in change like they did me. I can feel the silver that flows through this areas armored cars...but alas can do nothing as all banks here hate them and they all want 10% or more.

Hope you are in a place better. You may want to ask a bank to order halves for you, if they will. Most will only order if its $1000 you order, but many will allow you to come back and get it one box at a time or less as long as you get them within a certain time. Just ask em first.

Credit Unions seem to be the worse in my area. Never have anything, nor will they order here.

If you want to see how much you can get for them, just look at ebay. Regardless of silver prices, etc. ebay always reflects what people are willing to pay.

Right now prices are pretty nice!
